Reading Tutor: Orton-Gillingham

Description:Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Head of School, the reading tutor position plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. The tutor instructs and supervises students in a variety of learning settings using the Orton-Gillingham instructional approach. Assignments may also include working with individuals and/or small groups of students and performing other duties as assigned.

- Plan and implement instructional programs and services that adhere to the school mission and meet the strengths, interests, needs, and abilities of each student.
- Maintain a safe and secure learning environment.
- Create a learning environment that nurtures the talents and development of all students.
- Prepare long term and short term plans to accelerate student learning.
- Plan instructional intervention utilizing the Orton-Gillingham instructional approach to support each student with achieving learning objectives and outcomes.
- Monitor student progress and design lessons aligned to student needs.
- Evaluate student performance through observations, assignments, informal and formal assessments.
- Provide input to student educational plans and team processes.
- Maintain complete and accurate student records.
- Communicate student progress to students and parents/guardians. Meet with students and parents to support progress and growth.
- Oversee the appropriate use and care of instructional materials, resources, and equipment.
- Collaborate with school administration, colleagues, support staff, parents, and community members in the best interests of students.
- Improve skills and knowledge base in current trends, evidence-based practices, technology, and interdisciplinary connections.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Salary:
The salary for this 9 month position will be based on a salary scale. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the procedures of Glenwood Academy.
Hours:
- Hourly, part-time, and full-time positions are available.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the KPS (Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading) .
- Knowledge of the strengths and needs presented by students with language based learning differences.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when discussing students’ progress and concerns with staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form.
- Ability to implement effective lesson plans to support the educational program.
- Ability to work with diverse learners.
- Possess basic technology knowledge to support student learning and clerical tasks.
- Skilled in technology competency and software applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
- Ability to demonstrate strong human relations skills.
- Ability to have positive and professional communication with staff, administrators, parents, and/or the community.
Education:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in an applicable field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Training in a structured literacy and the Orton Gillingham interventional approach for struggling readers (OG PLUS preferred)
- Special Education experience or certification
- Two previous years of tutoring/teaching experience
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the flexibility to move around the school and classroom.
