Speech Language Pathologist

DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is one of the nation’s largest hospitals specializing in rehabilitation medicine and research. RIM is known for its clinical expertise in spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputee, orthopedics and catastrophic injury care. The Institute houses the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery and the Southeast Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of only 16 federally designated model systems of care for brain injury care and research. RIM also operates 31 outpatient sites throughout southeast Michigan specializing in sports medicine and orthopedics. Job Summary Diagnose and treat speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive disorders under general supervision according to established policies. Diagnose speech, language, cognitive and oral‑pharyngeal swallowing disorders using a variety of tests (articulation, language, voice/resonance, fluency, cognitive communication skills, etc.). Research and analyze patients’ medical history, test performances, medical records, and case histories to inform diagnosis and treatment. Design and administer treatment plans for patients with speech, language, and oral‑pharyngeal swallowing disorders. Counsel, educate, and advise patients and their families regarding communicative, cognitive, and swallowing functioning and develop home programs as needed. Document diagnostic reports and therapeutic progress notes and code information for billing to maximize reimbursement. Participate as a member of the inter‑disciplinary rehabilitation team; attend chart rounds and departmental meetings. Provide staff mentoring and develop/implement educational in‑services for staff. Provide presentations and/or in‑service education to professional staff, students, and the outside community. Instruct and monitor speech and language pathology interns. Enhance professional expertise through seminars, workshops, conferences, reading, and professional organizations. Qualifications Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology. Current license to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist in the State of Michigan. Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association. Three years of clinical experience to acquire skills for independent patient treatment. Minimum of 60 points on the professional growth and development criteria.
