Director of Transportation

This position is responsible for the day-to-day Transportation activities in the school system. This includes the management of all yellow bus routes, monthly maintenance, driver assignments and coordination, activity bus maintenance and assignments including reimbursement of costs. Budget management of the entire department including all mechanic positions and bus driver positions at school sites.

Work Months: 12

Education: Bachelor's Degree & 5 years Transportation experience in a school or institutional environment or 10 years' experience running the Transportation Department for another North Carolina School District.

Basic Skills:

• Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License,
• Have a driving record sufficient to gain approval by the Board of Education (BOE) insurance carrier to operate BOE motor vehicles at will (no DUI and no more than one ticket in a 5 year period)
• Have a clean criminal background for at least 10 years (longer for some charges / some charges are permanent disqualification from employment). No pending cases
• Possess personal computer skills as necessary to support the job (word processing & spreadsheets). District is a Google Suite user
• Be familiar with GPS Tracking Software o District Uses Edulog For Yellow Buses o District Uses GeoTab for support vehicles
• Be familiar with On Vehicle Camera Software o District Uses Samsara for Yellow Buses
• Be familiar with routing Software o District is transitioning to Athena Routing, from TIMS
• Be familiar with Time Management Software o TAC o Athena Time & Attendance
• Be familiar with Accounting Software o District is transitioning to LINQ from AS400/Sunpac
• Supplemented with Cook Spreadsheets

Responsibilities:

1. Keep the Chief Operations Officer informed and updated daily of all Transportation issues.

2. Assist with personnel items through all stages of employment

3. Plan, direct and review the work of all employees based at Transportation.

4. Coordinate with the Assistant Director of Maintenance and the Chief Operations Officer to review Transportation Complex equipment end-of-life replacement needs, and the prioritization of larger replacement projects.

5. Management of the Vehicle Fleet, including maintenance tracking through the web based GPS Software.

6. Able to operate a computer and various programs to manage the Transportation functions.

7. Maintain a good relationship with other departments, including principals, assistant principals, teachers, teacher assistants, cafeteria staff and custodians. They all support the Transportation Department.

8. Maintain adequate records and prepare required reports from the software noted above.

9. Receives, authorizes, prioritizes and delegates work as needed to ensure smooth operation of the Transportation Department

10. Inspects the condition of school buses to determine needed repairs and maintenance.

11. Assist in conducting and organizing workshops for Transportation personnel.

12. Assist in establishing and supervising a preventive maintenance program, including maintaining monthly inspections of all buses are required by the state.

13. Assist in the creation of the department local budget request and manage the budget.

14. Ensure that all required state forms are submitted to the state on time.

15. Ability to analyze problems and arrive at reasonable and economical solutions.

16. Be able to plan, schedule, and direct multiple tasks

17. Manage the emergency pager schedule.

18. Consult with outside vendors as needed to address maintenance issues (tires, transmissions, etc)

19. Inspect on-going and completed activities by Transportation Staff.

20. Endeavor to provide a safe work environment.

21. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Chief Operations Officer
