School Nurse

In cooperation with other health professionals, educators and school personnel, the school nurse assumes the initiative and responsibility for providing a wide variety of health care services designed to promote and protect the student's optimal health status.

Responsibilities include:

• Participating in program planning by identifying health needs of children in the school and making recommendations regarding budget.
• Implementing program objectives through activities such as communication with students, families, school staff and community persons and agencies.
• Assessing student and staff health status and the school community health based on epidemiological surveys.
• Preventing and controlling communicable disease and facilitating the adaptation to school of exceptional and/or handicapped children.
• Following up on health related absences and promoting optimal environmental personal health.
• Systematically assessing the health status and health needs of school children through periodic and episodic health appraisal, collection of health history, and periodic screening of at-risk populations.
• Planning and carrying out appropriate interventions such as health education, referrals, and crisis intervention.
• Following up on children and school personnel with known illnesses or health problems to ensure their fullest recovery and prompt return to school.
• Providing health counseling and guidance on an individual basis to assist students and their families in problem solving and decision making about health and development issues.
• Providing direct health education to students, youth, or parents and correlating service activities with the health education curriculum.
• Acting as a resource person in promoting health careers and providing information or in-service education to other school staff about health care issues and first aid management.
• Advocating for the health rights of children and their families both within the school setting and between the school and community at large.
