Registered Nurse - Ambulatory Surgery Center

Registered Nurse

Northwest Eye Surgeons is seeking a Registered Nurse to provide specialized nursing care to patients in our Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This role is responsible for delivering safe, high-quality patient care in accordance with physician orders, recognized nursing standards, applicable state regulations, and facility policies and procedures. The ideal candidate demonstrates sound clinical judgment, initiative, teamwork, and a commitment to patient safety and exceptional care.

Responsibilities

• Conduct preoperative and postoperative patient calls.
• Admit, assess, monitor, and discharge patients.
• Obtain and document patient medical histories, symptoms, and conditions.
• Administer medications and treatments as ordered by physicians.
• Provide intraoperative circulating services.
• Administer and monitor conscious sedation when appropriately trained and authorized (*).
• Serve as the designated Infection Control Specialist when assigned (**).
• Develop patient care plans in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
• Perform diagnostic tests and communicate patient care needs to the healthcare team.
• Maintain accurate medical records in accordance with applicable regulations and facility procedures.
• Educate patients and their families regarding treatments and postoperative care.
• Maintain knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and proper operating room setup.
• Follow established standards for aseptic technique, instrument processing, and sterilization.
• Stay current with nursing practices and developments relevant to operating room care.
• Complete required continuing education and competency assessments.
• Follow all compliance requirements, including HIPAA, OSHA, WISHA, and patient confidentiality standards.
• Adhere to all Northwest Eye Surgeons policies and procedures.
• Provide appropriate direction and oversight to medical assistants and surgical technicians.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

(*) Nursing Sedation – IV Medication Administration and Monitoring

When assigned and appropriately qualified:

• Completion of a conscious sedation certification course or equivalent training is recommended.
• Complete initial and annual nursing sedation competency assessments.
• Follow facility policies and procedures governing anesthesia services and nursing sedation.
• Administer conscious sedation medications as ordered and within the authorized scope of practice.
• Monitor and document patient vital signs during procedures.

(**) Infection Control Specialist

When designated:

• Maintain infection prevention and control programs in accordance with established protocols.
• Identify and assess infection risks using appropriate assessment tools.
• Conduct root cause analyses related to infections and unforeseen events.
• Coordinate infection control education and training for designated staff.
• Evaluate and report infection prevention and control outcomes.
• Participate in developing the annual infection control plan.
• Report deficiencies to the Infection Preventionist and through applicable QAPI and Governing Board processes.
• Maintain required continuing education.

Clinical Skills and Competencies

Competencies may include, but are not limited to:

• Clinical documentation, hand hygiene, INR testing, patient discharge, wheelchair transfers, and patient positioning.
• Medication administration, including oral, IV, IM, SQ, and ophthalmic medications.
• Injection safety, blood glucose monitoring, controlled substance counts, and medication labeling.
• IV insertion and removal, surgical time-out, aseptic technique, sterile field maintenance, and environmental cleaning.
• Laser safety, equipment operation, surgical site preparation, and YAG laser procedures, including YAG PI.
• Nursing sedation and related patient monitoring protocols.

Requirements

Required Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

• Current ACLS and AED certifications required.
• Knowledge of sterile techniques and ophthalmic procedures.
• Understanding of proper handling of surgical instruments, specimens, cultures, and smears.
• Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
• Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least one year of operating room or ambulatory surgery center experience.
• Experience with conscious sedation.

Education and Experience

• Graduate of an accredited college or school of nursing.
• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the applicable State Board of Nursing.
