Postdoc / Research Associate in Astromycology at Johns Hopkins Title: Postdoctoral Fellow / Research Associate in Astromycology Institution: Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Department: Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Start Date: Immediate The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated and independent scientist for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate position (depending on research experience) in the field of Astromycology. The focus of this role is on the role of fungal melanin in protecting against physical and chemical stressors relevant to the space environment, including radiation, temperature, humidity, pressure, and microgravity. This exciting opportunity also aims to elucidate the cellular and physicochemical mechanisms of fungal radiosynthesis, a process by which melanin absorbs electromagnetic energy and translates it into a form of energy that can be used by the cell for metabolic purposes. Understanding how fungi respond to the space environment is crucial because (1) fungi can infect spacecraft and potentially evolve virulent traits, and (2) fungi are a source of food, medicine, materials, and other industrial applications that can support human space exploration. Qualifications Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Engineering, or a related field. Experience in microbiology research, specifically involving fungi. Expertise in protein extraction, protein identification via mass spectrometry, and gene knockout techniques in yeast. Knowledge of spectroscopy techniques, particularly UV-visible spectrophotometry. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic research setting. Strong dedication to research, with a willingness to work long hours at the bench and a passion for the work being conducted. Demonstrated responsibility and commitment to achieving research goals. Additional Information This position is secured for two years, with a possibility of extension based on performance and funding.
