Clinical Lab Scientist

Location and Salary Austin, TX. Salary range $4,815.12 - $5,537.38 per month. Regular weekend day shift with Saturday duties. Shift differential applicable. Job Description Under the supervision of the LC Mass Spectrometry Screening Group Manager and the Lysosomal Disease Screening Team Lead, the Chemist II independently performs liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC‑MS/MS) analysis on newborn screening dried blood spot specimens. Responsibilities include sample preparation, quality control, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting of equipment, and record keeping. The role also participates in the safety program and follows standard protocols. Essential Job Functions Perform high-volume complex LC‑MS/MS analysis on neonatal screening specimens, including sample extraction and preparation of test solutions. Maintain detailed records and document analytical testing workflow. (40%) Conduct high-volume sampling of filter paper specimens and controls, assess sample acceptability, prepare and preserve samples and standards according to protocol. (25%) Perform routine preventive maintenance of complex equipment, troubleshoot issues, calibrate liquid handlers, and record maintenance activities. (15%) Evaluate and interpret complex data, identify atypical results, and consult with team lead or manager. Participate in quality control review and proficiency testing. (10%) Handle other duties such as disposing hazardous waste, housekeeping, monitoring equipment, and ensuring safety practices. Manage workflow and maintain compliance with laboratory guidelines. (10%) Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) Strong foundation in laboratory, clinical chemistry, MS/MS, LC‑MS/MS principles, and quality control. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work in a team environment. Proficiency in laboratory software, data analysis, and record keeping. Capacity to troubleshoot instruments and maintain testing equipment. Preparation of diagnostic reagents and controls with accuracy and safety. Initial Screening Criteria Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution (equivalent US degree if earned abroad). Preferred experience in human sample analysis using advanced analytical techniques, particularly mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography‑mass spectrometry. Experience operating and maintaining LC‑MS/MS instruments. Other Requirements Hepatitis B and Tetanus/Diphtheria immunizations required. Personal protective equipment (face shield, gloves, lab coat, safety glasses) must be worn. Functional color vision assessment administered during interview. Work hours may vary; the position entails regular Saturday duties and qualifies for a weekend shift differential.
