Job Title: Senior Underwriter – Construction General Liability

Location: Remote (United States)

Compensation: $150,000 – $350,000 Base Salary + Bonus

Position Summary

We are seeking a Senior Underwriter with deep expertise in Construction General Liability to join a growing underwriting team. This individual will be responsible for underwriting complex and high-value construction risks, driving profitable growth, managing broker relationships, and serving as a technical resource for the organization. This is a fully remote opportunity offering significant autonomy and the ability to work on sophisticated construction accounts nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Risk Assessment

• Evaluate and underwrite complex construction-related General Liability risks, including:
• New York Labor Law exposures
• General Contractors
• Trade Contractors
• Wrap-Ups (OCIP/CCIP)
• Project-Specific Programs
• Large Commercial Construction Projects
• Analyze submissions, loss history, financials, contractual risk transfer, and operational exposures.
• Determine appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, and coverage structures.
• Maintain underwriting discipline while achieving production and profitability objectives.

Portfolio Management

• Manage and grow a profitable book of construction business.
• Monitor portfolio performance, loss ratios, rate adequacy, and underwriting quality.
• Identify trends and recommend corrective actions to improve portfolio results.
• Collaborate with leadership on strategic growth initiatives.

Broker & Agency Relationships

• Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale and retail brokers.
• Generate new business opportunities through agency development and market presence.
• Negotiate terms and pricing on complex risks while maintaining profitability.
• Deliver exceptional service and responsiveness to distribution partners.

Leadership & Technical Expertise

• Serve as a technical construction underwriting expert.
• Mentor junior underwriters and underwriting assistants.
• Assist with training, referrals, and underwriting best practices.
• Provide guidance on complex liability exposures and coverage analysis.

Compliance & Documentation

• Ensure underwriting decisions align with company guidelines, authority levels, and risk appetite.
• Maintain accurate documentation and underwriting files.
• Adhere to regulatory and compliance requirements.

Qualifications

Experience

• 7+ years of Commercial Underwriting experience.
• Minimum 3+ years focused on Construction General Liability.
• Experience underwriting large and complex construction accounts.
• Strong understanding of:
• Construction Defect
• New York Labor Law (240/241) exposures
• Contractual Risk Transfer
• OCIP/CCIP Programs
• Large Contractor and Project Risks

Skills

• Strong analytical and risk assessment abilities.
• Excellent negotiation and broker management skills.
• Proven ability to manage a profitable book of business.
• Experience working with underwriting and rating systems.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Preferred

• CPCU, AU, RPLU, or similar insurance designation.
• Existing broker relationships within the construction marketplace.
• Authority and experience handling large premium and high-hazard construction accounts.
