The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Before and After School Teacher to join our team.
The YMCA focuses on empowering people in all forms, by improving health and well-being and inspiring action in and across our neighborhoods. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. As a Before and After School Teacher, you will support the YMCA Childcare Program year-round to serve our school age children with a variety of activity options to explore and develop the interests and talents of the youth with a focus on safety, health, social growth, and academic enhancement for children to have fun and thrive in our care. Our programs are run in various local schools. Key Responsibilities:- Maintain positive public relations with members and always represent the best interests and core values of the YMCA.
- Maintain positive relationships and effective communication with parents, students, school staff and peers.
- Support student goals, academic or otherwise.
- Lead curriculum and physical activities.
- Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety, and our YMCA values which includes implementation of proximity praise, specific action compliments, our Core Values and our 8 Points of Leadership.
- Maintain site and equipment, including implementing proper cleaning procedures and upkeep of equipment.
- Directly supervise children at all times and maintain program/site in compliance with state licensing standards.
- Attend and participate in family nights and program activities.
- Attend staff meetings at least once a month at an off-site location.
- Participate in the Annual Campaign by reaching site goal and asking 100% of the parents in the program.
- You are committed to valuing and promoting diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
- You are at least 18 years old with a High School Diploma or GED.
- You have at least one year of experience working with children in a childcare setting.
- Are willing to enroll in and complete STARS training within 60 days of employment (i.e. Ongoing 10 hours, 20/30 Hour Basic).
- You are currently certified (with documentation) or are willing to certify in Infant-Child CPR and Basic First Aid within 30 days of employment (YMCA will assist in this process.
- You are willing to obtain a Food Handlers permit (cost reimbursable), complete a pre-employment TB skin test with negative results (YMCA will assist in this process) and proof of MMR vaccination (before the first day of employment).
- Must be able to successfully complete required DCYF background and fingerprint checks before the first day of hire.
- You are able to complete online Child Abuse Prevention training on your first day, and other online and in-person training as required.
- You have reliable transportation, the ability to assist at other childcare sites as needed and attend meetings at off-site locations.
- Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks (in accordance with the WA State Fair Chance Act)

Key Responsibilities
• Maintain positive public relations with members and always represent the best interests of the YMCA.
• Maintains positive relationships and effective communication with parents. Engage parents as volunteers.
• Come alongside school personnel to support academic goals and plans for children and school.
• Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety, and our YMCA values which includes implementation of proximity praise, specific action compliments, and our 8 Points of Leadership.
• Maintain site and equipment, including properly implementing proper cleaning procedures and upkeep of equipment.
• Attend and participate in family nights and program activities.
• Recruit children for program; maintain accurate records of the children to include their development and attendance. As well as ensuring their immunization forms are on file as documentation of allergies.
• Understand the Washington Administrative Code to ensure program is in compliance at all times.
• Keep all certifications current.
• Assist Director in creating marketing plans and distributing marketing materials as needed to increase enrollment.
• Maintain cleanliness and order in facilities, school, and community sites.
• Treat every participant fairly and equally regardless of circumstances and abilities, making each feel good about themselves and encouraging a fun environment.
• Greet all parents daily and inform them of all program changes. Communicate frequently with parents concerning their child's behavior, academic progress, and socialization in the program.
• Directly supervise children at all times and maintain program/site in compliance with state licensing standards.
• Follow the guidelines, policies, and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, Child Abuse Prevention, and emergencies, in the YMCA Staff and Parent Handbooks, and Association Staff Handbook. Understand knowledge and guidelines of Child Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Complete all required forms daily and monthly.
• Dispense medication according to the Medication Authorization Form and maintain accurate records of such. Ensure proper storage of medication according to required standards. Return medication to parents/guardian, as needed.
• Communicate effectively with licensors, Site Directors, and Program Directors.
• Implement curriculum, providing an integrated, child centered, comprehensive curriculum and multicultural environment, which meets the needs of every child, including those with disabilities.
• Understand and be able to explain financial assistance to staff and members.
• Understand and assist in monitoring FTE's and enrollment numbers in program. Program should reach licensed capacity and plans should be created to increase that number.
• Work a split shift, Monday through Friday.
• Attend occasional meetings and trainings outside of regular split shift.
• Set every child up for success; implement "Plan of Success" form when needed and meet with all parties involved to create a plan to help the child succeed.
• Assume other responsibilities as mutually agreed upon with supervisor.
• Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment.
• Meet performance measurement by telling the Y story and raising charitable dollars to fulfill our mission.
• Assist staff leadership team in reaching campaign goals through recruiting campaigners, making personal asks and supporting branch events.
• Participate in the Annual Campaign by reaching site goal and asking 100% of the parents in the program.
• Assist Director in recruiting at least 1-3 parents to be an Annual Campaign Volunteer.
• Other duties as assigned. Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
• Minimum age of 18 with High School Diploma or GED
• A love for working with children
• A minimum of one year experience working with children in a child care setting
• Knowledge of school-aged child development
• Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate
• program activities
• Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships
• with people from different backgrounds
• Sensitivity to the needs of families including adults and children
• Have or commit to obtaining CPR, Basic First Aid, Food Handlers, required STARS trainings, and TB cards
• Washington State Driver's license (when applicable) with current copy of driving abstract

Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
- Must be able to run with children during physical activities.
- Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must frequently lift or move 35-40 pounds and occasionally lift or move a higher amount.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical accidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
- Ability to plan, lead, and participate in all activities, including physical activities.
