Primary Objective


The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) is seeking an individual to provide: 1) professional mental health treatment services to the community members brought forward by the Bloomington Police Department for services (including, but not limited to, calls for service, cases referred by Hennepin County Attorney's Office going through the Drug Offense Diversion Program, and to families impacted by opioid overdoses); 2) administrative services overseeing the program in collaboration with the Sergeant of the Community Services Unit; 3) supervision of short-term temporary/seasonal employees (interns) hired for the purpose of providing therapeutic treatment in conjunction of completing their Master's degree in relative field; and 4) Make referrals to appropriate community resources and arrange for services.

Examples of Duties
  • Provide mental health treatment services to referred community members.
  • Provide supervision of interns, including individual sessions (1 hour weekly) and group supervision/case consultation (2 hours weekly).
  • Review theories including (but not limited to): psychodynamic, transgenerational, structural, experiential, strategic, Milan systemic, behavioral and cognitive behavioral, postmodern, and Erikson's stages of psychosocial development.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee mental health treatment services under respective diversion program.
  • Provide mental health treatment services to individuals and families impacted by opioid overdose.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with interns and external partners.
  • Establish standard operating procedures for workflow.
  • In collaboration with the police department, oversee onboarding training requirements for intern therapists.
  • Supervise interns hired for the purpose of providing therapeutic treatment to individuals needing services, in conjunction with completing their degree in a relative field. Supervision to consist of the following:
    • Individual supervision which will review interns' cases, discuss case evaluations/assessments, and any specific concerns the interns may have regarding their cases. Live supervision will be provided by direct observation and review of audio/video sessions.
    • Group supervision which will review record-keeping and paperwork: progress notes, diagnostic intakes, treatment plans, clinical diagnoses, and client genograms. Group supervision will also include case consultation and use of theory in practice, training on clinical diagnoses, self of the therapist, the therapeutic relationship, self-disclosure, effective coping, cultural competence (race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, socio-economic status), suicidality and homicidal ideation, clinical issues from the perspective of a systemic lens, and biopsychosocial effects.
    • Train interns on crisis intervention techniques and treatment, with a focus on domestic violence, addiction concerns, trauma symptoms, and interaction with legal entities.
    • Promote interns' self-advocacy, highlighting the bi-directional relationship between supervisor and intern to encourage interns' personal growth and contribution to the program.
    • Encourage interns to include couple and family clients as part of their case load.
    • Review documentation, including electronic health records, onboarding processes, school program paperwork and student evaluation criteria.
    • Develop interns' policies and procedures manual, including intern conduct, performance and program expectations.
  • Develop case plans.
  • Make referrals to appropriate community resources and arrange for services.
  • Follow through on treatment/service plans.
  • Make field visits to clients' homes.
  • Explain policies, regulations, and programs to clients and the public.
  • Develop, prepare and maintain case records, case findings, correspondence and reports.
  • Tend to additional responsibilities as therapist and supervisor, as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively summarize material, accurately proofread and finalize written documents.
  • Knowledge of and ability to speak proper English and utilize such in written documentation. Ability to apply good judgement, make decisions where appropriate and anticipate and initiate next steps.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality; to act and share information with discretion.

Minimum/Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master of Arts Degree
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
  • Licensed as a social worker by the Minnesota Board of Social Work
  • Experience providing mental health therapy and social work services within a police department setting as part of a licensed practice program in Minnesota.
  • Supervisory experience.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Supervisory experience of other therapists (approved by the MN Board of Marriage and Family).
  • Three or more years of experience working as an embedded social worker for a large metropolitan city.
  • Three or more years of experience working for a large metropolitan police department.
  • Three or more years of experience working with Public and Environmental Health.
