Software Engineer III (Java/Spring Boot) 5+ yrs exp.

Our client needs a Software Engineer III with strong Java development experience to support a major vulnerability remediation and API security initiative. This role will work alongside an established team of Java engineers to address a backlog of application vulnerabilities, security findings, dependency issues, and security-hardening activities across client-facing applications.
The role is approximately 60% backend and 40% frontend, with the primary emphasis on Java/Spring development and security remediation.


Key Responsibilities

• Develop and modify applications using Java 17/21 and Spring Boot.
• Work with REST APIs, microservices, and web applications.
• Identify and remediate vulnerable packages and dependency chains, including frontend dependencies.
• Support network and application security-hardening activities.
• Troubleshoot and test applications following dependency and security-related changes.
• Make targeted frontend changes when required to address vulnerabilities such as input validation or JavaScript security issues.
• Work collaboratively with Java engineers through code reviews and established development standards.
• Support containerized applications running in OpenShift/Docker/Kubernetes environments.

Required Skills:

• Five (5) years of experience
• Strong professional experience with Java, preferably Java 17 or 21.
• Strong Spring Boot/Spring ecosystem experience.
• Experience developing and supporting REST APIs and microservices.
• Solid understanding of web application security, API security, protocols, and vulnerability remediation.
• Experience with application dependencies/package management and troubleshooting dependency upgrades.
• Frontend/web development knowledge sufficient to understand and remediate security issues.
• Experience with JavaScript and Ajax.
• Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, quality-focused engineering environment.

Bonus Skills:

• React experience - not required.
• Node.js/NPM, Thymeleaf, Backbone, or Spring MVC.
• OpenShift/Docker/Kubernetes experience.
• Banking/financial services, MFA, or credit card services experience.
• GitHub Copilot/AI-assisted development experience
