School Aide - Special Education Support

About the Role

The School Aide provides essential support to students with special needs in a classroom and school environment. Working under the direction of the Special Education Department, classroom teacher, and/or designated supervisor, this role helps students access instruction, develop independence, and safely participate in school activities.

In addition to instructional and behavioral assistance, the School Aide may support students with personal care, mobility, and therapeutic needs as directed by licensed professionals such as rehabilitation specialists, social workers, or healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities

• Support students with instructional tasks, classroom participation, and learning activities

• Assist with implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavior support strategies

• Provide behavioral guidance, redirection, and encouragement to promote positive outcomes

• Support students with personal care needs (e.g., toileting, feeding, hygiene) when required

• Assist with mobility and transportation within the school environment

• Help maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom setting

• Work collaboratively with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers

• Follow care plans and instructions provided by supervising professionals

• Document observations and report student progress or concerns as directed

• Promote student independence, dignity, and engagement at all times

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required

• Must be at least 18 years of age

• Commitment to following all professional standards of practice

• Current CPR certification (if applicable)

• Current health certificate (per contract or state regulations)

• TB clearance (PPD, questionnaire, or chest X-ray if applicable)

• Must meet all federal, state, and local employment requirements
