District Expectations Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance. Physical presence is expected as part of a reliable and predictable pattern of attendance. Support the district’s vision, mission, goals, and Strategic Plan. Engage in civility, respect, and professionalism. Maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Responsibilities Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and burnishes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts all horizontal and vertical surfaces; removes and disposes of waste products daily; maintains clean custodial closets. Performs minor non‑cleaning maintenance tasks of the facility, including changing light bulbs, toilet seats, unclogging toilets, changing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, securing windows, delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities/meetings, and assembling/moving furniture. Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program, including mowing (pushing or riding), weeding, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal, as appropriate. Opens or closes and secures the facility, including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems; turns on/off all lights; ensures grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards; responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter. Performs work duties independently or as part of a custodial crew; works cooperatively in group situations; exhibits tact and consideration; displays a positive outlook and pleasant manner; offers assistance and support to co‑workers; works actively to resolve conflicts. Assumes modified duties and responsibilities of the Head Custodian or Custodial Crew Leader in the event of absence or vacancy. Possesses basic comprehensive skills of the working English language. Performs any other duties as assigned. Performance Expectations Attendance & Punctuality: Schedules time off in advance, begins work on time, keeps absences within guidelines, ensures responsibilities are covered when absent, and arrives at meetings and appointments on time. Dependability: Responds to requests for service and assistance, follows instructions and management direction, takes responsibility for own actions, and meets attendance and punctuality guidelines. Job Knowledge: Competent in required job skills and knowledge; exhibits ability to learn and apply new skills; keeps abreast of current developments; requires minimal supervision; displays understanding of how the job relates to others; uses resources effectively. Personal Appearance: Dresses appropriately for the position, stays well‑groomed, and wears the School Board provided uniform daily. Safety & Security: Observes safety and security procedures; determines appropriate action beyond guidelines; uses equipment and materials properly; reports potentially unsafe conditions. Teamwork: Balances team and individual responsibilities; exhibits objectivity and openness to others’ views; gives and welcomes feedback; contributes to building a positive team spirit; puts the success of the team above own interests. Experience and Qualifications Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in large‑scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance work. Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: All new and current employees are highly encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools. Language Skills: Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; writes simple correspondence; effectively presents information in one‑on‑one and small group situations; possesses basic comprehensive skills of the working English language. Mathematical Skills: Add and subtract two‑digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s; perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. Reasoning Ability: Applies common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions; deals with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. Computer Skills: Proficient with internal HCPS email system and HCPS district website as appropriate. Physical Demands Physical Activities: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, handling, keyboarding, feeling, talking, hearing, tasting/smelling, near acuity, far acuity, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision. Lifting Demands: Up to 55 pounds; over 55 pounds requires a 2‑person lift. Reaching Activities: Both dominant and non‑dominant hand; overhead. Environmental Conditions: Noise intensity moderate; extreme cold, heat, wet/humid conditions; work with cleaning chemicals – wear eye protection; vibration/impact; work with or near heavy equipment; proximity to moving mechanical parts; exposure to electrical shock, fumes, or airborne particles.
