EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
High School Diploma or Equivalent
One month related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.


PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY :
Service, repair and maintain all District owned small engine powered and non-powered lawn care and off road utility equipment utilized by the Maintenance Department and campus based custodial forces.


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for providing routine scheduled maintenance services to an array of powered and non-powered equipment.
2. Sharpens cutting edges and blades, replaces and adjusts worn belts and bearings, changes lubricants and filters.
3. Straightens frames and decks, repairs cracks and breaks in metal component, adjusts drive belts and gears, replaces starting pull strings and drives, cleans fuel tanks, replaces leaking gaskets and seals, straightens and adjusts linkages, inspects and repairs operator safety devices (reports evidence of intentional abuse or defeated safety devices), cleans and paints equipment to prevent corrosion and provide a professional well maintained appearance.
4. Performs "on-site" and "'in-shop" diagnostics and troubleshooting service for small engine ignition and fuel systems.
5. Utilizes stroboscope, precision dwell meters, engine timing diagnostic test sets and volt/ohmmeter (digital and analog) to analyze the condition of electrical and electronic ignition and charging system components.
6. Assesses firing sequences and timing dwells making necessary adjustments to ensure optimum ignition.
7. Cleans and replaces engine intake air cleaners and filters.
8. Utilizes vacuum gauges, air flow velometer, factory prescribed settings and visual. inspection of exhaust opacity to set carburetor air/fuel mixtures and injection pump timing
9. Performs limited overhaul and cleaning of carburetor as needed to restore ease of starting and reliable engine operation.
10. Responsible for the repair and overhaul of small engines ranging from the miniature two cycle engines used on string trimmer to the intermediate sized four stroke diesel engines utilized on small off-road implements.
11. Disassembles engines, machine drives, equipment transmissions and cutting assemblies to perform visual and dimensional inspection for wear and remaining service life.
12. Utilizes precision inside and outside micrometers and dial indicators to measure various wear surfaces - compares findings to manufacturer's specifications and instructional manuals to assess need for replacement.
13. Uses nondestructive testing techniques such as ultraviolet magnetic dye penetrant and positive pressure tests to evaluate the integrity or engine blocks, cylinder heads, vessels, hydraulic cylinders and pump housing.
14. Repairs minor cracks or imperfections in metal housing and blocks utilizing metal lacing and weldment techniques.
15. Refinishes machine fit or precision milled surfaces utilizing hone, dye grinders, burnishing files and/or ultra fine grit sandpaper, emery/crocus cloth.
16. Orders correct parts prescribed by the equipment manufacturer for the reassembly of the small engine.
17. Following the step by step procedures, torque values and assembly order set forth by the equipment manufacturer, reassembles the engine, hydraulic cylinders, ancillary equipment or mechanical apparatus.
18. Performs initial adjustment of fuel and ignition systems.
19. Following all major overhauls, responsible to evaluate and document engine performance and reliability through a series of functional tests.
20. Prepares work orders and historical maintenance records, services provided and materials used on all equipment serviced or maintained.
21. Analyzes historical maintenance data prior to the start of any major work to identify failure trends, high cost maintenance items and life cycle maintenance.
22. Provides equipment pickup and delivery services.
23. Provides instruction on the safe operation and care of all powered equipment to maintenance and custodial workers.
24. Performs random inspections of equipment for abuse and participates in assessments of damages resulting from intentional abuse or neglect.
25. Receives and responds to service requests from campus administrators.
26. Responsible for independently assessing the work situation on site, determine the best method of accomplishment and taking the necessary corrective action while following accepted safety practices.
27. Consults with supervisor as needed relative to interpretation of guidance, and extent of work authorized if work requires more than the number of hours allowed by the maintenance service order.
28. Maintains confidentiality of information.
29. Frequently required to drive District vehicles in the performance of assigned tasks.
30. Reports to work on time every day.
31. Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Professional working knowledge of mechanical systems, two and four cycle gasoline or diesel internal combustion engines, electric powered equipment and hydraulics and performance testing techniques
• Journeyman mechanic technical knowledge of the trade practices and procedures used in small engine repair; electrical, electronic and mechanical ignition systems; fuel injection and carburetor systems; fluid, belt and gear drive systems, hydraulics, and performance testing techniques - knowledge must be coupled with the well rounded field experience to perform effective inspections, identify abnormal performance, perform diagnostics and make effective adjustments
• Average knowledge and proficiency to use and/or learn to use a personal computer
• Ability to analyze and assess mechanical equipment performance problems using precision electrical, pneumatic and mechanical diagnostic instruments, meters and measuring devices
• Communication skills necessary to discuss and comprehend equipment performance issues with the customers
• Skilled in the use of oxyacetylene cutting torches, plasma cutters, arc and multi inert gas (Mig) welding, metal shaping and repair, touch-up spray painting tools, pneumatic air drive and cutting tools, grinders and sharpening tools, and the array of specialized tools used in the performance of small and intermediate engine overhauls
• Ability to comprehend manufacturer's technical publications
• Position involves performing precise dimensional measurements using instruments graduated in thousandths of an inch
• Above average mathematical skills to assimilate area wear and volume measurements
• Above average proficiency in the use of Maintenance Software
• Valid Texas Driver's License with driving record that meets the requirements of the District

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to drive District vehicles in the performance of assigned tasks. Additionally, the individual may be required to submit to drug and alcohol screening at any time throughout employment without prior notification. Personal protective equipment is required to be worn when performing tasks that subject employee to injury.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, explosives, risk of radiation, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock. Tasks are performed inside and outside where worker may be subject to cuts, abrasions, bruises and burns from sharpened blades, partially disassembled equipment, hand or power tools. When required, wears protective clothing and equipment which may be uncomfortable. Work is usually dirty, dusty and greasy. May be required to work under inclement conditions. Employee is exposed to inhalation and physical contact with parts cleansing solvents, paint thinner, gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products that may pose a health hazard. Required to carry a District pager and respond to emergency services calls on a twenty four hour basis. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. May be required to work outside of normal duty hours and/or weekends or holidays in order to handle emergencies that may arise. Required to carry District provided pager, or two-way radios and to respond to emergency service calls on a 24 hour basis.
