Patient Management Put Pets First – create recommendations with the patient’s well‑being as the first priority. Continually improve the quality of patient care by studying veterinary journals, textbooks, and attending CE seminars. Perform examinations, diagnostic tests, medical, surgical, and dental procedures that deliver the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort. Perform medically appropriate euthanasia with compassion and concern for the patient’s comfort and the client’s emotional status. Recommend referral to a specialist when likely to significantly improve the prognosis. Client Management Promote and participate in the Pillars and Standards of Conduct, ensuring all team members practice them. Develop rapport with clients through compassionate communication. Determine clients’ needs and wishes. Obtain patient history and present signs through client questioning. Explain physical examination findings. Provide appropriate preventive care, including vaccines and nutritional protocols per quality standards. Recommend and explain diagnostic procedures, medical and surgical therapies, and home‑care methods in both written and verbal form. Provide patient prognosis based on clinical problems. Generate or direct generation of fee estimates/treatment plans and present them to the client. Keep clients informed about pet status and diagnostic results. Provide telephone consultation and follow‑up calls in accordance with hospital timelines. Administrative Management Maintain client/patient medical/surgical records using SOAP format and hospital standards/timelines. Keep logs up to date: surgical, narcotics, radiology, laboratory. Accurately charge clients for all services performed. Participate in planning, execution, and analysis of service delivery improvements. Support marketing and promotional events and programs. Ensure a clean, safe environment for clients, team, and management. Team Management Maintain an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual respect. Prescribe detailed directions for drug doses, routes, times, and rates. Assist technicians and foster an educational environment. Provide training in client education, diagnostics, treatment, anesthesia, instrument care, surgical assisting, and dentistry. Expedite fee estimate/treatment plan generation and invoicing. Record medication and supply information promptly. Assist receptionists with client inquiries using appropriate tone and grammar. Educate clients on basic pet health and appointment scheduling. Professional Responsibilities Maintain honesty in dealings with clients and colleagues. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude. Show empathy toward colleagues regarding clinical judgment. Share information and concerns through regular attendance at veterinary meetings. Represent the hospital to the professional community and public as requested. Demonstrate an “owner” mentality by supporting all team members. Model Cara Veterinary’s Core Competencies daily. Special Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Workdays spent standing, sitting, and typing at a computer. Physically lift up to 50 pounds without assistance. Assist in lifting patients over 50 pounds. Assertively restrain patients to ensure safety. Comfortable around pets of all species. Work in a moderately high noise level environment. Follow written, oral, or diagram instructions and solve multi‑variable problems. Maintain ambulatory skills sufficient for hospital duties. Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and lift/handle up to 50 pounds. Have good hand‑eye coordination, arm‑hand‑finger dexterity, and visual acuity for keyboards, equipment, and reading. Meet vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, and focus adjustment. Be aware of exposure risks to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances. Experience, Education and/ or Training A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, or equivalent, from an accredited university.
