Position Summary Create a safe, positive and inclusive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies, practices and procedures. Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Provide direction for the program and staff. May create staff schedules and provide department administrative support as needed. Job Duties / Responsibilities Department and administrative support such as assisting in onboarding Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area Know/review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, practices and procedures, complete related reports as required Maintain effective relationships with our diverse members, participants and other staff Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool/aquatic area Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving Perform chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and take appropriate action Perform other duties as assigned Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations Ability to maintain certification‑level of physical and mental readiness 1 year of lifeguarding preferred Qualifications Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards Current First Aid, CPRPRO, AED and O2 certifications Current YMCA Lifeguard or RLSS, CRC, ARC Lifeguard Ability to pass lifeguard water test Must be able to remain alert Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations Ability to maintain certification‑level of physical and mental readiness 1 year of lifeguarding preferred Fluency in second language desired Y Culture Build relationships with a diverse membership base in culturally responsive ways, connect members with one another and to the YMCA Exhibit Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility Complete required training and certifications within established guidelines Arrive on time ready for shift, clock in/out within timekeeping system Embrace Team Leader Core Competencies Mission Advancement Models and teaches the Y’s values Ensures a high level of service with a commitment to improving lives Provides volunteers with orientation, training, development, and recognition Cultivates relationships to support fundraising Champions inclusion activities, strategies, and initiatives Builds relationships to create small communities Empathetically listens and communicates for understanding when negotiating and dealing with conflict Effectively tailors communications to the appropriate audience Provides staff with feedback, coaching, guidance and support Operational Effectiveness Provides others with frameworks for making decisions Conducts prototypes to support the launching of programs and activities Develops plans and manages best practices through engagement of team Effectively creates and manages budgets Holds staff accountable for high‑quality results using a formal process to measure progress Personal Growth Shares new insights Facilitates change; models adaptability and an awareness of the impact of change Utilizes non‑threatening methods to address sensitive issues and inappropriate behavior or performance Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well; uses best practices and demonstrates up‑to‑date knowledge and skills in technology Physical and Mental Demands Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 50 pounds.
