Entry-Level Medical Stop Loss Underwriter

Company HM Insurance Group Job Summary This role is pivotal in pricing quotes and analyzing contract structures for group insurance based on claims experience and employee group characteristics. You will utilize your underwriting authority within HMIG’s policies to ensure profitability and growth while making informed decisions on quotes. Your analytical skills will contribute to assessing risk factors for new enrollments, annual renewals, and contract amendments, adhering to established underwriting policies and standards. You will analyze various data points, including the organization’s financial health and past claim experiences, to determine offerings and set competitive rates. Additionally, you will generate reports and provide insights to internal teams, clients, and producers, enhancing underwriting results and financial activity. Essential Responsibilities Manage a portfolio of renewing accounts and write new business at profitable levels, driving HMIG towards its business targets while utilizing various systems to complete and track work. Review and complete rating and analysis tasks with guidance from senior staff. Calculate rates, apply different financial arrangements, interpret pricing policies, and adapt to unique situations. Identify questionable claim patterns and develop strategic recommendations for renewal and prospective clients. Implement corporate risk management policies and adjust for unique situations not covered in standard pricing formulas. Recognize clients who fail to comply with corporate risk management policies or enrollment criteria. Recommend adaptations of pricing tailored to meet client-specific needs while adhering to guidelines. Analyze member risk, collaborating with internal teams to effectively manage this risk. Support various internal initiatives, including fraud detection, compliance, wellness management, and product development. Complete renewals and prospective quotes in line with production and timeliness standards. Adapt to changing priorities as market conditions evolve. Communicate policy recommendations clearly, supporting them with rationale based on management principles. Influence sales and the external audience towards suitable risk solutions. Guide the sales team towards the right pricing and structuring of each quote. Perform other duties as assigned. Education Required: Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance, Business, Computer Science, or another quantitative discipline. Substitutions 6 years of relevant experience in the specialization area may substitute for the degree. Experience Minimum: 0-2 years of experience in Insurance or Underwriting for self-funded and/or fully insured prospects is preferred. Skills Understanding of the interaction between internal departments and external stakeholders. Competence in using applicable computer systems and electronic tools. Ability to work independently and manage routine projects effectively. Support and align with corporate and departmental goals and initiatives. Adhere to ethical business practices and maintain privacy and confidentiality. Strong problem‑solving, organizational, and negotiation skills. Excellent mathematical aptitude for analytical tasks. Required Licensure None. Preferred Licensure Actively pursuing a related professional designation in the healthcare industry and willingness to complete one course within twelve months in LOMA's Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) or America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).
