Driver Education Instructor

Performs intermediate semi skilled work in providing driving instruction to students; does related work as required. Work is performed under the director of transportation and the driver education coordinator.

Essential functions include:

• Providing vehicle education and driver training to students.
• Preparing and maintaining detailed records and files.
• Performing pre-trip inspection of driver training cars, and preparing cars for operation.
• Providing each student with driver training educational materials and range layout.
• Ensuring that all students have proper permits.
• Providing vehicle service and preventive maintenance procedures and operating instructions.
• Assigning exercises to students, observing student driving and providing direction and instruction at the range.
• Evaluating and grading student operation and advising on needed improvements.
• Escorting, instructing, training and evaluating students on open highway driving.
• Preparing records and reports on student progress, and providing results to appropriate personnel and/or parents, as required.
• Ensuring that vehicles are properly maintained.
• Ensuring that driving range is properly secured.
• Preparing and maintaining appropriate records and files.
• Performing related tasks as required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include:

General knowledge of driver training programs, methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and the safe operation of motor vehicles; general knowledge of the principles and methods of instruction; thorough knowledge of vehicle service and preventive maintenance methods and techniques; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish effective working relationships with school staff and students; ability to operate a motor vehicle properly and safely.

Education and experience include:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Possession of appropriate driver training certification from the Virginia Department of Education.
