HVAC Technician

Position Summary Leads troubleshooting and repair efforts on commercial grade heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and multi-zone systems. Performs skilled mechanical maintenance duties, including the inspection, repair, installation, and alteration of plant HVAC and refrigeration systems and related equipment, and conducts preventive maintenance and routine servicing. Key Responsibilities Complete troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of commercial air conditioning and multi-zone heating and cooling systems that incorporate digital and central energy management system controls. Develop HVAC system modification plans and assist in planning jobs for modifications. Create preventive maintenance checklists for new equipment. Interpret as-built building blueprints and recommend system modifications for remodel projects in accordance with applicable regulations. Research and select materials for HVAC installation, repair, and maintenance. Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Perform all maintenance-related duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of HVAC installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance. Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to the trade. Ability to develop HVAC system modification plans. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Ability to read schematics, blueprints, and/or technical manuals. Document and track preventive maintenance activities. Knowledge of mechanical systems, building materials, and emergency maintenance. Detailed knowledge of HVAC systems that incorporate digital control systems linked to a multi-building, computer-based Energy Management and Control System (EMCS). Carry out mechanical and electrical inspection and maintenance on equipment to bring them to optimal performance. Perform oiling, belt adjustment, cleaning, greasing, and other preventive maintenance work. Determine service requirements by applying technical skills and experience, including system operations and preventive maintenance experience. Serve as a company representative to other contractors, owners, and trades. Provide preventive maintenance inspections to supervisors and suggest corrective actions. Complete and submit paperwork in a timely manner to the Maintenance Lead. Perform other functions assigned by the Maintenance Lead or manager. Possess great mechanical aptitude. Strong ability to read and understand technical instructions and follow blueprints. Strong knowledge of equipment, tools, and methods commonly applied in repairing air conditioning and heating equipment in commercial and residential buildings. Strong knowledge of principles of operation of air conditioning and heating systems, and safety practices concerning HVAC work. Strong ability to diagnose equipment and determine if repair and maintenance work is needed; and maintain records of work done. Strong ability to perform assigned tasks independently. Possession of the current EPA Universal Refrigerant Recovery Certification preferred. Additional Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of trades experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completion of formal HVAC training through an academic program or apprenticeship. Minimum age of 21 years (or 18 years in CT, PA, and WV) and eligibility to work in the U.S. Ability to pass a background screening. Physical Requirements Push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 100 lbs to a minimum height of 5 feet and carry that weight a minimum distance of 50 feet, with or without mechanical assistance. Work seated or standing at workstations for extended periods, maintain body equilibrium while climbing ladders, stairways, stopping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching, and use hands/fingers to hold, grasp, turn, pick, pinch frequently or constantly. Handle organic matter daily, wear PPE as appropriate (eye, face, hand, arm, head, foot, body, fall protection), and be exposed to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions while wearing PPE (95°F or greater). Maintain visual acuity with or without job aids to perform activities such as reading, viewing a computer terminal, and visual inspection involving small parts/details; clarity of vision at 20 ft or more in day and night/dark conditions. Speak and communicate verbally at conversation levels with co-workers, vendors, etc. (Moderate noise). Compensation & Benefits Salary will be commensurate with experience.
