2026 Correction Officer Captain

Duties Oversee and direct operations within the assigned DOC institution to ensure the proper and safe functioning of the institution. Oversee vehicle and mail searches, staff and visitor searches, inmate searches, and building and ground inspections. Write and review reports and documentation, manage incidents, and maintain security. Understand use of force protocols and determine when to implement them; oversee inmates, review inmate counts, manage inmate death procedures, and coordinate inmate meals and transportation. Manage discipline procedures, use the Inmate Management System (IMS), oversee payroll, and administer the employee assistance unit. Monitor rosters, training and counseling, and respond to visitors as required. Supervise staff, oversee daily operations, program activities, and perform related work as required. Eligibility and Qualifications Current employee of the Massachusetts Department of Correction in the title of Correction Officer III with permanent civil service status. Have been employed in the eligible title for at least twelve consecutive months immediately preceding the examination date (temporary service may be combined with permanent service). Meet all statutory eligibility requirements for departmental promotional examinations. Exam Subjects Technical Knowledge (TK) : Knowledge of institution management, perimeter security, inmate management system, inmate accountability, inmate transportation, inmate escape procedures, disorder response and management, employee/inmate safety and security, special operations, use‑of‑force protocols, legal considerations, shift and employee supervision, and general administration and management. Situational Judgement Test (SJT) : Judgment and decision‑making, accountability, adaptability, leadership, team building, interpersonal skills, and conflict management. Experience & Education All candidates must complete the 2026 Correction Officer Captain E&E Claim application online.
