Staff Registered Nurse

The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN provides care to these patients using the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial, and human resources within the institution's philosophy. Essential functions include performing all responsibilities and duties required by the unit specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided assures the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. Completing the initial assessment upon patient admission and developing an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards is crucial. This plan of care is based on patient and family needs. Implementing the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures is required. The RN modifies the plan of care based on continuous evaluation. Taking responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents is essential. The RN communicates with others directly and privately when necessary to resolve issues. Offering constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers is important. Conferring with colleagues to expand the knowledge base is encouraged. Identifying one's learning needs and taking the initiative to begin appropriate solutions is necessary. Fulfilling all requirements of departmental competencies is required. Department specific job functions include preparing patients for procedures. Completing assessments, reviewing health histories, starting IVs, and providing education to patients is required. Monitoring and sedating patients during their procedures is part of the role. Caring for patients in both phase 1 and phase 2 recovery is essential. Assisting the CRNA during cases requiring anesthesia involvement is expected. The overall role of the professional RN in Digestive Health is to define, direct, supervise, and evaluate patient care directly and via delegation to others using the nursing process.
