Duties

Provides direct care across outpatient, inpatient, home, community living, acute, sub-acute, Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, and Rehabilitation settings.

Supports Veterans with acute to chronic conditions under direction of licensed healthcare staff.

Assists with daily living needs: hygiene, comfort, mobility, exercise, rest, nutrition, elimination, skin integrity, and rehabilitative care.

Uses observation skills to collect, report, and record physical, emotional, and behavioral data; promptly refers changes to nursing staff.

Maintains therapeutic relationships through respectful communication with Veterans, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

Measures and records vital signs, height, weight, intake/output, and collects non-sterile specimens.

Utilizes patient-care equipment including glucose monitors, bladder scanners, lifting devices, oxygen systems, suction equipment, and other required technology.

Sets up, organizes, and maintains patient-care supplies and equipment; ensures clean, safe, and therapeutic environments.

Follows infection control practices, proper body mechanics, Safe Veteran Handling, and all safety regulations.

Monitors Veterans according to assigned observation levels, including remote observation, preventing harm and supporting behavioral safety needs.

Provides supportive care to critically or terminally ill Veterans and offers emotional support to families.

Participates in treatment planning, shift reports, care conferences, team meetings, and huddles.

Promotes Veteran independence through rehabilitative principles, limit setting, education, and individualized care.

Recognizes emergent situations and initiates basic life support and appropriate interventions.

Engages in therapeutic groups, reality orientation, and activity-based interventions.

Maintains confidentiality in verbal, written, and electronic communication.

Uses resources responsibly; adheres to environmental safety procedures, including GEMS initiatives; completes equipment checks.

Completes mandatory training, annual competencies, and unit-based education; seeks feedback and self-directs improvement.

May precept new Nursing Assistants and support orientation of team members.

Functions collaboratively within the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Work Schedule

Full-time, 12-hour Day Shift: 7:30am - 8:00pm or 12-hour Night Shift: 7:30pm - 8:00am. Both shifts work alternating weekends and holidays.

Pay

Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off

37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.

Parental Leave

After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy

After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66
