Job Summary BASIC FUNCTION : The Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is an integral member of the adult cystic fibrosis (CF) division at University of Michigan Health (UM Health). The RDN has their own provider schedule to see patients referred by the medical provider team as part of a multidisciplinary care approach. The RDN serves as the nutrition expert in helping people to make lifestyle changes for overall health improvement, disease prevention and management. The RDN supports patients via oversight of specialized diets or nutrition goals needed for optimization of medical outcomes. This RDN will provide medical nutrition therapy while working with patients referred from our U-M Health pulmonary/CF providers in accordance with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundations guidelines. The RDN provides service to adult patients over the age of 18 years. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Modes of Work Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes . Work Schedule WORK HOURS: The person who fills this role will be asked to work 32 hours per week. Work Locations WORK LOCATION: At time of hire, the RDN will work as a hybrid employee. A hybrid employee works a portion of their FTE appointment onsite at the Taubman Center and a portion of their FTE remotely.
Union Affiliation This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment. Background Screening Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses. - Supervision received from Manager of Ambulatory Care Nutrition Services.
- Leadership oversight also received from Ambulatory Care/Division administration/physician leadership.
- Liaison relationship with interdisciplinary health care team for patient care populations of responsibility.
- Peer relationships with RDNs in work group, including other CF RDN well-established on team.
- RDN may precept dietetic interns.
- Conduct an ongoing comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients identified at nutritional risk and/or for patients identified to be seen as per ambulatory clinic standards.
- Incorporate evidence-based standards when interpreting patient related data.
- Organize patient health and disease information to identify nutrition-related problems.
- Evaluate need for specialized nutrition support and make appropriate recommendations accordingly.
- Develop and implement an individualized plan for nutrition intervention.
- Perform nutrition diagnosis after identifying the problem and clarifying the cause of the problem.
- Ground interventions through review of quality research and/or use of medical nutrition therapy evidenced-based practice.
- Appropriately document individualized nutrition treatment plan, including follow-up documentation of patient outcomes and revisions to plan in the electronic medical record. This communication is performed in a timely manner that is consistent with unit policy and procedures.
- Recognize the varied needs of age-specific populations, as well as cultural, religious, and ethnic concerns.
- Reassess the nutrition care process and implement changes as indicated.
- Assist CF team with prior authorizations for nutritional supplements and support regimens, and other items related to a patients' nutritional care, as needed.
- Communicate regularly with the medical team through interdisciplinary ambulatory care clinic coverage.
- Abide by UM Health policy for the proper use of patients? protected health information.
- Abide by UM Health policy for the proper use of infection prevention precautions in patient care areas.
- Provide service to the ambulatory adult CF clinic for identified patient populations, including in person 1:1 appointments, virtual care via 1:1 appointments, group visits, and 1:1 telephone support. Has routine communication with patients as needed for frequent diet related questions on very complicated diet regimens or when other nutrition issues arise.
- Utilize charge capture by RDN for RDN services.
- The RDN is also an integral part of the CF program's quality improvement team.
- Collect outcome data to help improve practice as requested.
- RDN provides informational content via UM Health social media outlets, education material development, and websites.
- Provide quality service based on customer expectations and needs.
- Incorporate UM Health core values of respect, compassion, trust, integrity, efficiency and leadership into all work efforts.
- Maintain productivity standards and practice effective time management.
- Assist in achieving compliance with state and federal regulatory and accrediting agencies.
- Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, task forces, and projects as appropriate.
- Able to work with a team to accomplish organizational goals.
- Communicate in a clear, concise and diplomatic manner both verbally and in writing.
- Implement critical thinking to solve problems.

- Registration by the Commission on Dietetics Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
- If licensed on or after January 1, 2024: Master's Degree
- Two or more years' experience providing medical nutrition therapy in an ambulatory care setting.
