Learning Specialist (Elementary / Upper Elementary) We are actively seeking a compassionate and experienced Learning Specialist for potential openings for the 2026–2027 school year. This position will primarily support students in the elementary and upper elementary grades. Candidates must have a strong background in special education and a deep understanding of the academic, social, and emotional needs of students with diverse learning profiles. The Learning Specialist will work closely with students, classroom teachers, and the Learning Support Team to provide targeted academic support in both classroom and small group settings. This role includes implementing accommodations and modifications, supporting differentiated instruction, and explicitly teaching and reinforcing foundational academic and executive functioning skills. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate: an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team based environment; strong verbal and written communication skills; a deep understanding of child development, particularly in elementary and upper elementary students; expertise in designing and implementing accommodations and modifications; experience supporting literacy and mathematics skill development; the ability to support students in both classroom and small group settings; comfort working within an inclusive, co taught model; a student centered, flexible, and solution oriented approach. Qualifications: A degree in Special Education is required. Experience working with elementary or upper elementary students with learning differences is required. An advanced degree in Special Education, Education, or a related field is preferred. Middle School English Teacher We are actively seeking an experienced teacher for an opening within the Middle School in grades six through eight with a focus on English. Candidates must have a strong understanding of the academic, social, and emotional needs of middle school students and a passion for working with this age group during a critical stage of development. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate: an ability to teach engaging and developmentally appropriate English curriculum aligned with the school’s program; an ability to guide students in close reading, literary analysis, and thoughtful discussion of texts; an ability to teach writing across multiple genres including narrative, analytical, and argumentative writing; an ability to support students in developing grammar, vocabulary, and writing mechanics; an ability to foster a classroom environment that values student voice, perspective, and respectful discourse; an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues; strong verbal and written communication skills; an understanding of, appreciation for, and commitment to twenty first century learning skills; an aptitude for and commitment to meaningful technology integration in the classroom; the ability to create engaging learning experiences that foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of reading and writing. Experience with reading and writing workshop models, project based learning, Responsive Advisory, differentiated instruction, and student centered instructional practices is preferred. A master’s degree and prior middle school teaching experience are also desirable. Familiarity with the science of reading and structured literacy practices is a plus. Middle School History Teacher We are actively seeking an experienced teacher for an opening within the Middle School in grades six through eight with a focus on history. Business Manager The Business Manager is responsible for managing the financial and physical resources as well as all Human Resource duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Collaborate with Head of School to develop operating budget for the school as well as multi-year financial models. Oversee financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets, protect confidential information, and ensure accurate financial reporting. Oversee school business functions, including tuition billing and collection, accounts payable, contracting, payroll, benefit administration, regulatory reporting and compliance, and other business administration activities. Oversee contractual agreements with all vendors. Communicate clearly and enthusiastically to all staff and stakeholders. Ensure that human resource policies and practices are clearly articulated, consistently applied, and conform to legal requirements; also oversee employee benefit programs. Remain current with business management trends and cultivate professional standards and development by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in local, regional, and national professional organizations. Any other duties as directed by the Head of School. Common Qualification Requirements A bachelor’s degree, accounting or finance preferred. Five years of experience in finance/accounting. Proven success in a senior administrative role, preferably working with a board. Demonstrated leadership qualities – organizing people and processes. High ethical standards. Excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to work collaboratively with coworkers and other school community members. Keen analytical skills and a detail-oriented work style. Front Desk Receptionist The Front Desk Receptionist serves as the welcoming face of St. Michael’s during the school day, setting the tone for every visitor’s experience. A warm, professional demeanor and positive energy are essential in this role. The receptionist helps uphold the school’s mission by fostering an environment of trust, openness, and strong communication among students, families, faculty, and staff. This position is integral to the daily operations of the school, handling a wide range of essential administrative responsibilities and, at times, providing direct support in classrooms. The Front Desk Receptionist reports to the Head of School and collaborates closely with the full administrative team and faculty. Regular hours are 7:15 AM to 3:15 PM, with occasional extensions as needed. This is a 12 month position. General Responsibilities Provide administrative support, answer and direct phone calls in a polite and friendly manner, welcome parents, students and visitors and answer any questions they might have or direct them to the appropriate individual. Vet and keep detailed, accurate records of visitors to campus. Oversee “early bird drop off” in lobby from 7:30‑7:50 am daily. Coordinate daily attendance logs. Facilitate and record late arrivals and early departures of students based on parent communication; notify teachers when unexpected disruptions occur. Help manage student and family databases (Blackbaud). Manage student transcripts, including sending transcripts, as requested, to schools. Receive deliveries; sort through and distribute incoming mail, packages and student items. Coordinate and oversee the execution of the hot lunch program. Develop school year calendar in consultation with the administrative team and maintain SMCDS Master Calendar and facilitate room reservations throughout campus. Create and distribute Weekly newsletter and all constant contact messaging; supports school communication and marketing efforts, as requested. Create and maintain the Mason House TV display with up-to-date information. Collaborate on Week Ahead to ensure all important upcoming dates are listed. Contribute to campus crisis prevention and attend Crisis Management Team Meetings. Maintain reception area and all common areas in a clean and tidy manner at all times. Assist and support with all planning and execution of school-wide events. Assist and support the Admin team with other projects as requested. Other responsibilities as assigned. Qualities and Qualifications Strong communication skills and ability to interact with children of all ages, parents, visitors, etc. Sense of humor and calm demeanor. Operates well in a fast paced environment where responsibilities can change quickly. Comfortable with technology, Google suite and a range of applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel; ideally have experience working with school database (SIS) applications. College degree and/or relevant experience/training. Alignment with the essential expectations of SMCDS team members. Substitute Teacher The school has opened a search for Substitute Teachers in all disciplines. Substitutes have flexibility as to the days and hours that they work. The school day goes from 8 am to 3:15 pm. Candidates should have a college degree and experience working with children in at least one of these age groups; Toddler (2 year olds) through prekindergarten (4 yrs. olds), kindergarten through grade 2, grades 3‑4, and/or grades 5‑8. Extended Day Aides St. Michael’s Country Day School is a non‑profit, independent Toddler to 8th‑grade day school in Newport, RI. The school has opened a search for Extended Day Aides. Our Extended Day Program runs from 3:00‑5:30 pm each school day. The ESD program provides opportunities for students to play games, exercise, socialize with friends, and work on homework. Aides have some flexibility as to the days and hours that they work. Candidates should have some experience working with children.
