Position Summary The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes the initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating shared leadership, evidence based practice, relationships based care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. The role integrates a professional practice model, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to deliver "quality" patient care as measured by nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting bodies. The Staff Nurse I engages and gathers information from patients and families to advocate for patients, develops appropriate educational plans, and responds to changing needs while collaborating with the health care team to promote effective patient care. Tasks include participation in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities and supporting unit goals in daily behavior. Duties & Responsibilities Completes required orientation program and unit-specific competencies. Develops, implements and updates the patient's plan of care based on ongoing assessment and input from patient’s family. Shares information and collaborates with the health care team to promote effective patient care. Verifies and implements orders from physicians and advanced practice providers by performing interventions as prescribed and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record. Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate educational plan. Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities and responds to patient’s changing needs. Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback. Demonstrates commitment to UI Health’s values through teamwork and communication to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, and a clean, safe, therapeutic environment. Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession. Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence‑based research, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care per nursing quality standards and accrediting bodies. Utilizes the hospital approved acuity tool and electronic scheduling tool to facilitate optimal staffing, scheduling, and patient assignments. Recognizes and supports shared leadership as the chosen method of nursing governance. Participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior. Performs scrub functions including selection and handling of instruments and supplies used during procedures. Performs circulating functions including monitoring, recording, and communicating patient condition and managing overall nursing care of patient before, during, and after procedures. Prepares cases, case carts, and operating rooms. Demonstrates accountability for job performance by seeking opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge and maintaining conditions of employment (RN licensure, BLS, and other required unit-specific certifications). All other assigned duties that assure quality, safety, and efficiency. Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools. Receives and provides feedback to health care team members regarding performance/practice. Direct patient care may include triage, transfer care, medication administration, preventive screenings, blood pressure checks, diabetes education, wound care, ear irrigation, voiding trials, pre‑op education, lipid management, anti‑thrombosis management, continuous glucose monitoring, monitor placement, assistance with procedures, guidance during emergencies, proper stocking of emergency equipment, and logged medications. Performs interventions to maintain patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels. Performs interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the end of the postoperative period. Provides nursing and appropriate monitoring in accordance with policies and procedures. Practices and monitors aseptic technique. Adheres to UI Health’s Code of Conduct. Treats patients, families, staff, students, and visitors with respect and dignity. Observes nursing time, overtime, and attendance policies. Completes electronic learning modules and related programs as assigned by UI Health by established date. Complies with University Health Services TB, flu compliance, and fit‑testing requirements. Utilizes established communication channels to resolve patient care problems. Identifies recurring clinical practice or related unit problems and participates in problem‑solving and resolution. Collaborates with other nurses to provide positive learning experiences for staff and students. Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing staff and students. Accesses UI Health intranet/Outlook for relevant communication and policy updates. Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts on the unit and UI Health. Takes responsibility for continued professional growth by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies to meet such needs. Proactively participates in a committee or process improvement project. This person works independently within the scope of nursing practice; the Director or CNCII provides coaching, guidance, and feedback, and evaluates performance annually and as needed. All other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation. 2 years of previous operating room experience. Current BLS/CPR and/or other required unit specific certifications. Current advanced cardiac life support ACLS/PALS, or within 6 months of hire for the main hospital. Effective communication skills (oral and written). Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record with on‐the‑job training. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history. BSN graduate of an accredited nursing program. Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse from the State of Illinois. Preferred Qualifications Nursing certification preferred. Excellent attendance record. EPIC proficiency.
