$113.27k - $140kNew York Times
Office: Washington, DC Department: Journalism — Reporting Job Description The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world‑renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world‑class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for. DealBook is hiring a Washington‑based reporter to cover the intersection of business, policy, and power from the capital. You are someone who can bring readers behind the scenes in Washington—offering sharp, timely, and revealing insights into what’s happening at the White House, on Capitol Hill, inside key regulatory agencies, and along K Street. You have and will develop deep sourcing within the SEC, FTC, DOJ, FCC, and other financial and business regulatory bodies, as well as in Congress, the executive branch, and lobbying firms. You can break news, decipher policy developments, and anticipate where Washington is heading on critical issues that affect markets, companies, and the broader economy. You can contextualize and humanize complicated policy decisions—writing with urgency, sophistication, and style. A strong grasp of financial policy and corporate regulation is essential, as is an instinct for what matters to DealBook’s business‑savvy readers. This is a hybrid position based in Washington, D.C. and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities: Break news and deliver original reporting on developments in Washington that affect the business world. Build and maintain high‑level sources across government, lobbying, and industry. Write with authority and clarity about legislative, regulatory, and enforcement developments. Anticipate policy shifts and explain their implications for readers. Understand and engage with the DealBook audience. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. You will report to an Editor on Dealbook. Basic Qualifications: 5+ years of experience covering politics, regulation, or business in Washington. A strong track record of breaking news and developing authoritative sources. Demonstrated understanding of financial regulation and policymaking processes. Demonstrated writing and analytical skills. Demonstrated news judgment and ethical standards. The ability to translate complex policy into compelling stories. Preferred Qualifications: Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced newsroom environment.
