Police Communications Officer

The City of Aventura is accepting applications for the position of Police Communications Officer. ***Police Communications Officer/Public Safety Dispatcher Recruitment Incentive of $2,000 for completing the Phase I, Call Taker training.*** Responsible for carrying out two-way communications with law enforcement personnel. Work involves screening routine and emergency telephone requests for police services and relaying that information to police personnel in the field. Duties also include, but are not limited to, performing record checks for officers in the field, maintaining records of all available police units, and responding to requests. The position reports to the Communications Supervisor. Lateral candidates are preferred. Lateral means you have previous experience with 911 Communications dispatching and/or call-taking. Following the review of their application, candidates are required to complete and submit a Personal History Questionnaire. Applicants must fill out a detailed online Personal History Questionnaire that includes notarized forms and supporting documents. Furthermore, they must also undergo a pre-employment skills assessment called Criticall.

This position requires employees to work day, evening, overnight, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergencies. Life Insurance. The city provides life insurance equal to 1 times the annual employee's salary up to $50,000 through UNUM. Employees can purchase additional term life insurance coverage at low term rates through UNUM.

Retirement Plan. The City contributes an amount equal to 14% of the salary to a defined contribution 401(a) Retirement Plan. Employees begin vesting at 20% after one year and are fully vested after 5 years.

Police Officer Pension Plan. Sworn Personnel are in a Defined Benefit Plan: City Contribution 27.696%; Employee Contribution 10.775%. Defined Benefit Plan: 22.5 years of credited service, regardless of age; or age 57 with 10 years of credited service; 5-year DROP. Take a look at the Police Pension Plan Description.

Voluntary Retirement Plans. 457 pre-tax retirement plan. Roth IRA retirement plan.

Disability Insurance. Long-term disability includes a minimum of 50% salary coverage up to $5,000/month. Short-term disability replaces a portion of earnings while unable to work due to non-work-related illness or injury.

Life Insurance. City pays 1 times annual salary up to $50,000, including Accidental Death & Dismemberment policy. Employees can purchase additional life insurance up to 5 times their annual salary as well coverage for dependents.

Flexible Spending & AFLAC. Employees can enroll in yearly Flexible Spending Accounts pre-tax for medical and dependent care expenses. AFLAC plans are available for purchase at group rates.

Vacation Leave. Employees with less than 4 years of service receive 80 hours of vacation per year. Employees with 4-10 years of service receive 120 hours of vacation per year. Employees with over 10 years of service receive 160 hours of vacation per year.

Personal Leave. Employees are entitled to 24 hours of personal leave per calendar year.

Sick Leave. Employees accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month. Employees who do not utilize sick leave for a six-month period are eligible for an additional 8 hours of vacation. Employees leaving the City are eligible for up to 100% payout for unused sick leave based on length of service up to a maximum of 800 hours.

Bereavement Leave. The City allows 32 hours of leave for in-state funerals and 40 hours for out-of-state funerals.

Job Basis Leave. Employees not eligible for overtime receive 5 days each year in recognition of the extensive number of hours worked in excess of normal working hours.

Educational Reimbursement. The City offers a 75% reimbursement of tuition costs for employees completing a course with a "B" or better. Reimbursement is based on the tuition rate charged in the state university system.
