Job Description State Equipment Fleet (SEF) – Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) seeks a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to maintain and repair heavy‑ and light‑equipment used for secondary roads, rural airports and other agency vehicles. What You Will Be Doing Professionally maintain all heavy‑ and light‑equipment associated with construction and maintenance of roads, airports, and other agency vehicles. Diagnose and resolve unusual or complex equipment problems using a variety of techniques. Perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on heavy equipment. Diagnose, maintain, repair, and modify systems including transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine & emission, fuel injection, hydraulic, air and electrical brake systems for light and heavy‑equipment. Travel may involve day trips or overnight stays in small aircraft to remote sites. Who We Are Looking For Mechanical expertise with knowledge of machines, tools, and maintenance systems. Flexibility and rapid adaptation to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles. Vehicle maintenance knowledge covering motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems. Self‑management with initiative, effort, and minimal supervision. Minimum Qualifications Union referral required for vacancies, except for promotions, transfers, or emergency appointments. See class specifications at for competency details. Required Documents at Time of Interview Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) front and back (if applicable). Three professional references (name, title, phone). Commercial Driver's License Requirement Mandatory CDL per federal regulations. Candidates must obtain a Class A Alaska CDL within 120 days of hire and sign an agreement conditioning employment. Drug and Alcohol Policy Compliance with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy is required. Employment will not begin until a pre‑employment drug test is passed and recorded per federal standards. Tool Allowance Employees provide their own hand tools and receive a monthly tool allowance reviewed by management upon hire. Supplemental Questions Recruitment includes a supplemental questionnaire. Answers will determine advancement to interview. Education Provide transcript(s) to verify educational credentials used to meet minimum qualifications. Foreign education requires documented equivalency. Work Experience List employer, title, dates, and employment type to verify work experience supporting qualifications.
