Maintenance Worker I

Description We have an opening for a 12‑month, 8‑hour maintenance position (6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Monday–Friday) in the Maintenance Department. Responsibilities Perform unskilled and semi‑skilled maintenance, repair, demolition, and construction work in various building trades. Assist maintenance personnel with construction, demolition, installation, and maintenance of roofs, furniture, fences, playground equipment, cabinets, shelving, chalkboards, and bulletin boards. Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of gas and water lines; floor and ceiling tile; heating, ventilating, and cooling systems; and door hardware. Load, unload, and drive maintenance service vehicles to and from work sites. Prepare surfaces and paint a variety of equipment, furniture, and facility structures. Participate in maintenance projects such as moving furniture and equipment, large setups, and special events. Perform custodial and cleanup functions as required. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge Common tools, materials, equipment, and terminology used in general maintenance trades (e.g., air gun, skill saw, table saw, impact drill, wrenches, drain snake, tractor, forklift, bobcat, dump truck). Rules, regulations, and policies pertaining to the maintenance of school facilities. Safe working methods and procedures, including work projects around students. Ability Learn how to use tools and equipment common to maintenance trades safely, appropriately, and effectively. Read and work from simple drawings and blueprints. Prepare simple reports and records. Perform heavy manual activities. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Work courteously and tactfully with co‑workers, public, and parents. Promote team building and a positive work environment. Experience and Education Six (6) months of experience as an unskilled and semi‑skilled worker in one or more basic maintenance trades, demonstrating knowledge of trade‑related tools. Equivalent to completion of high school, supplemented by coursework or training in one or more maintenance trades. Licensing and Certifications Valid Class C or higher California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License to operate District‑assigned vehicles. Condition of Employment Insurability by the District’s liability insurance carrier. Must receive two (2) hours of asbestos awareness training within the first 60 days of employment. Physical Demands Perform heavy work involving lifting up to 100 pounds, frequent lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds, and ascending/descending ladders, stairs, ramps, and slopes. Walking or standing for extended periods is required. Medium, light, and sedentary work is also performed. Application and Selection Process Qualified applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will participate in a written examination and technical oral interview (50/50 weighting). Those who score well will be placed on an eligibility list and may be invited to a final selection interview.
