Travel RN - Med/Surg - Orthopedics

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a fast-paced Orthopedic unit, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ortho experience and an active NC or compact RN license.

Job Details

• Hospital-based orthopedic unit with a 39-bed capacity and an average daily census of 37 patients,
• Patient population includes orthopedic, neuro spine, med/surg, and post-surgical cases,
• Nurses are expected to manage complex pain management needs for ortho and spine patients,
• Patient ratio is typically 5-6:1, with the possibility of flexing up to 7:1 in extreme circumstances,
• Shift: nights, 12-hour shifts (18:45-07:15), 3 days per week,
• Option for 36 or 48 hours per week available,
• Block scheduling option available (Fri/Sat/Sun or Sat/Sun/Mon),
• Every other weekend is required; if a weekend shift is called off, it must be made up on a weekend,
• Travelers may be required to float to other med/surg units within the facility based on census needs,
• EMR: Epic (experience required),
• COVID-positive patients are cared for on all units, not in a dedicated cohort,

Job Requirements

• Active NC or compact RN license required (may be pending at time of consideration),
• Current certifications required: BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS),
• Minimum 2 years of orthopedic RN experience required,
• IV start and telemetry skills required,
• Epic EMR experience required,
• Must pass an EKG test prior to start,
• Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 12 months required prior to start (pending at time of consideration is acceptable),
• Preferred: ACLS, charge nurse experience, and Level I Trauma experience,

Additional Information

• First-time travelers are welcome to apply provided they have Epic experience,
• Orientation is conducted weekly; pre-start modules (8-10 hours) must be completed before the assignment begins,
• No RTO is permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation,
• Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; requests beyond 7 days require facility approval,
• No holiday RTO is permitted; candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays,
• Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility may be offered a different rate,
• Former permanent, PRN, or per diem employees of Novant Health or New Hanover Regional must wait 12 months before being eligible to work as a traveler,
• Travel pairs are permitted; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules,
• Contracts are a 13-week minimum, with the option to extend; indicate if interested in a longer contract
