Job Description
Electrical Controls Technician – 3rd Shift (Automation & PLCs)
Job Type: Full-Time / 3rd Shift
Starting Pay: $33.00 – $37.00 per hour (plus 3rd Shift Differential)
Location: Northwest Ohio Area
Work Environment: Clean, Climate-Controlled Manufacturing Facility
Take Ownership of Modern Automation in a Clean Shop
If you are an experienced controls technician looking for off-shift autonomy, modern automation, and a clean manufacturing environment, this position is built for you.
We are hiring an Electrical Controls Technician to support fast-paced, high-speed automated production lines on 3rd shift. In this role, you will troubleshoot live equipment, optimize complex control loops, and keep critical manufacturing lines moving—backed by strong leadership without micro-management. This is a dedicated controls and automation role requiring strong foundational electrical theory and advanced PLC troubleshooting skills to hit the ground running independently.
Why Join Our Technical Team?
State-of-the-Art Automation: Direct hands-on work with modern PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and high-speed motion control systems.
Clean & Climate-Controlled Environment: Work in a clean, modern facility focused on safety, quality, and continuous technology investments.
Competitive Compensation: Starting pay rate of 33.00–37.00/hr, an additional 3rd shift differential, and comprehensive healthcare and retirement benefits.
Off-Shift Autonomy: Real ownership of floor troubleshooting during shift operations with supportive engineering resources.
Comprehensive Safety & Training: Immediate Arc Flash certification and continuous site safety training investments.
Key Responsibilities
Live Line Support: Provide rapid online troubleshooting and real-time response to active production line calls to ensure maximum uptime.
Controls & System Automation: Diagnose, troubleshoot, parameterize, and program variable frequency drives (VFDs), motion control systems, temperature loops, and complex automation hardware.
PLC Diagnostics: Connect to, diagnose, monitor ladder logic, and maintain PLC and HMI control systems using industrial software suites.
Electrical Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair complex electrical faults on high-speed equipment, including motors, relays, switches, sensors, and control panels.
Schematic Navigation: Read and interpret complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to solve multi-system issues independently.
Safety Adherence: Maintain strict compliance with LOTO procedures, Arc Flash protocols, and NFPA 70E electrical safety standards during all technical tasks.
Preventive Maintenance: Execute and document scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) routines on automated production machinery.
Digital Logging: Track all work orders, repair actions, parts usage, and root-cause findings using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Facilities & Handoffs: Complete plant electrical maintenance tasks during scheduled downtime and communicate shift status clearly to incoming teams and leadership.
What You Bring to the Team
Core Qualifications:
Education: Associate Degree (2-Year Technical Degree) in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, or a closely related field required.
Experience: 3+ years of hands-on industrial electrical controls and automation maintenance experience in an automated manufacturing environment.
Practical PLC Skills: Proven ability to connect to PLCs online, write/edit/monitor ladder logic, and troubleshoot I/O modules to isolate complex equipment faults.
Drive & Motion Control: Hands-on experience installing, adjusting, parameterizing, and repairing AC/DC drives, VFDs, and motion control hardware.
Electrical & Safety Expertise: Strong capability reading electrical schematics, line diagrams, and technical manuals with a strong commitment to Arc Flash safety and NFPA 70E standards.
CMMS Proficiency: Comfort using digital work order systems to document repairs, track parts, and log preventive maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with Allen-Bradley software tools (Studio 5000, RSLogix, FactoryTalk).
Prior experience operating autonomously on a 3rd shift or off-shift schedule.
Shift & Training Structure
Assigned Shift: 3rd Shift (11:00 PM – 7:00 AM).
Onboarding & Training: Candidates complete an accelerated onboarding and orientation period on 1st Shift (typically 2 to 4 weeks) to become acclimated to equipment, safety protocols, and facility procedures before transitioning permanently to 3rd Shift.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Physical Activity: Ability to stand for extended periods, use hands and tools, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
Lifting Demands: Regularly lift up to 10 pounds, frequently lift up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
Vision Needs: Requires close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and color vision capabilities.
Drug & Health Policy: Must satisfy company pre-employment screening policies, including a nicotine-free workplace policy.
Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.
