Drinking Water Associate Process Engineer

Overview This position is based in Richmond, VA and is a staff role for a mid‑level Water Process Engineer. The role focuses on conventional and advanced water treatment, including coagulation, clarification, softening, media filtration, membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, UV/AOP, ozonation, carbon adsorption and distribution system water quality. Experience in water reuse, brackish and seawater desalination, bench‑scale or pilot testing is desirable. Key Responsibilities Assists in preparation of engineering deliverables: process/mass balance calculations, design criteria/basis of design memoranda, process flow diagrams, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), trade‑off studies, and master planning studies. Supports multiple projects simultaneously under guidance of a senior process engineer, handling complex technical challenges. Active role in applied research activities involving bench, pilot and full‑scale testing to evaluate alternative treatment processes. Independently develops recommendations for treatment processes, equipment and/or materials selection. Collects, assimilates, analyzes, and manages data for process design work. Prepares moderately complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles. Manages quality requirements and applies advanced engineering techniques and problem‑solving analyses. Demonstrates strong technical writing skills and effective communication. Coordinates with internal and external team members for successful project execution. Actively seeks to understand client interests and drivers, applying this understanding to performance of work. Provides support to business development or pursuit activities, including proposal development and pre‑positioning meetings. Supports knowledge management and mentors interns and junior engineers. Applies current design guides, standards, codes and Black & Veatch policies to assigned tasks. Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts. Qualifications Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering preferred. 5 years of experience in water treatment, with a working knowledge of municipal effluent reuse, brackish and seawater desalination, brine management, and related design guides and standards. Understanding of consulting, project execution, client services, and business development. Effective written and oral communication skills; strong learning ability, drive for results, priority setting, planning, and ability to manage ambiguity. Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of one year of related work experience.
