THE OPPORTUNITY We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Construction Inspector to oversee public works and capital projects. This position involves ensuring that all construction activities adhere to approved plans, specifications, safety requirements, and regulatory standards. As a key field representative, you will work closely with the City, contractors, engineers, utility providers, developers, and property owners to facilitate successful project delivery while safeguarding public interests. In this role, you will conduct detailed inspections of construction sites, evaluate materials and artistry, and monitor contractor compliance. The responsibilities will also include documenting project activities, conducting field testing and inspections, and preparing comprehensive project reports.

IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate for the Construction Inspector role possesses extensive technical knowledge of construction methods, materials, and relevant regulations at all levels of government. With hands-on experience in inspecting public infrastructure and large-scale projects, they have a strong understanding of engineering principles and applicable codes. This candidate excels at conducting detailed inspections to ensure compliance with specifications and safety standards, demonstrating exceptional analytical abilities in evaluating construction plans and identifying potential issues. They possess a balance of technical expertise and effective communication skills, enabling them to engage effectively with contractors, engineers, project managers, and the public. The candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and committed to maintaining accurate documentation throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring safe and efficient completion in alignment with contract requirements. Additionally, they uphold professionalism and integrity, exercising sound judgment in enforcing standards and resolving construction-related concerns. Adaptable and customer-focused, the ideal candidate is motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the successful delivery of public works projects that enhance community infrastructure and quality of life.

MINIMUM AND DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or a G.E.D. equivalent; two years of experience in construction inspection; six years of trades experience working on large public works construction projects; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

ABOUT THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT The Public Works Department is responsible for public works administration; city engineering; maintenance of public facilities located within the street right-of-way; design and construction of City-built capital improvements; administration of traffic facilities; providing electric service to new development in residential, commercial, and industrial areas; and related activities.

THE SELECTION PROCESS Applicants possessing the MOST DESIRABLE qualifications at each level, based on a screening of required application materials, including the completed Supplemental Questionnaire, will be invited to continue in the selection process. Video Appraisal Interview Applicants may complete a self-guided video interview by recording responses to a series of structured questions. These questions are designed to assess each candidate's qualifications and suitability for the position. There is no live interviewer or proctor; candidates will record their answers independently and submit the videos for evaluation. Technical Interview: Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a structured technical interview designed to evaluate job-related knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in key competencies required for the position. Candidates will respond to a series of standardized questions, and their performance will be assessed using predetermined evaluation criteria to ensure a fair and consistent appraisal process. Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure. Eligible List: Once the appraisal is complete, HR will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.

SELECTION PROCESS: Following an administrative review of each application, only the most qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview and/or testing. The successful candidate will be required to pass a medical examination, and to submit original documentation to establish both work authorization and identity (per the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986).
