Summary Serves as Journeyman Pipefitter within the Facilities Management Service/Engineering Branch at the Orlando VA Medical Center. Employee reports to the WS-4701-10 Maintenance and Operations Supervisor. This role is responsible for the day‑to‑day maintenance and operations of all pipefitting duties, including the installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of plumbing, kitchen equipment, medical gas piping systems, steam systems, and other mechanical equipment used in the facility. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date, 06/30/2026. A specific length of training and experience is not required; however, evidence of training or experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screen‑out element: applicants are first evaluated against a prescribed screen‑out element; those who meet or exceed the minimal acceptable qualification are considered for further rating. Job elements evaluated include: Equipment Assembly – Installation – Repair; Interpretation of instructions and specifications (including blueprint reading); Measurement and layout; Technical practices; Troubleshooting; Use and maintenance of tools and equipment. Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer, or National Service program work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, professional or community organizations). Full‑time experience is considered 35–40 hours per week; part‑time experience is credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements Must be physically fit, able to lift, pull, climb, crawl, and work with hands over head in confined areas. Must be able to stand for long periods, walk, work off ladders, or stage materials. Must lift equipment weighing 60 pounds or more. Assistance may be requested to avoid injury. Working Conditions Work takes place within the medical facility's operating functions and requires the use of appropriate safety tools and clothing. The employee may perform assignments in remote areas such as sub‑basements, machinery rooms, rooftops, roads, and walkways, while protecting themselves, other staff, visitors, and patients. Duties Install, maintain, repair, and inspect all varieties of plumbing and gas piping systems and mechanical equipment used in the facility. Periodically inspect piping, valves, control fittings, and auxiliary equipment of steam plant, gas‑fired equipment, and steam‑gas and water distribution systems for defects. Make rough sketches or prints of newly installed equipment for the Pipe and Metal Supervisor to update the master piping and plumbing blueprints. Erect or suspend scaffolding as required and ensure proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment. Confirm all tools and equipment are functioning properly and safe for use. Construct dust barriers and/or block‑off areas as needed for safety and protection of patients, staff, visitors, and equipment. Work schedule: Tuesday–Saturday, Sunday–Thursday, or Monday–Friday with shifts of 7:00 am‑3:30 pm, 3:00 pm‑11:30 pm, or 11:00 pm‑7:30 am.
