About the Position

Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 27 weeks Shift: Day/Night, variable Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Two years as a Registered Nurse, one year in Emergency Department License: RN Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification Must-Have: - Two years experience serving as a Registered Nurse, at least one year in an Emergency Department environment Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. The ED RN applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate for managing life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain/discomfort and safety. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. The RN connects with patients and families during triage, identifies the initial management of patients, and assigns priority of care according to established standards. He/She establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical need, detects and documents major deviations from the norm for all age groups within acceptable time frames, and correctly identifies necessary steps and interventions. He/She uses direct observation, patient/family interviews, reports, and data to conduct secondary assessments. The RN identifies contributing factors, health histories, and events preceding emergent health events. He/She assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual and documents and reports any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse across all age groups. The ED RN reassesses patients to identify responses to treatment and/or changes in condition and responds appropriately. He/She encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. The RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. He/She understands personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The ED RN prepares patients and families for diagnostic procedures and treatments and makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care. He/She teaches patients what is needed for continued care and healing at home. The RN assesses patient and family learning styles and structures educational sessions to maximize understanding. He/She asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. The ED RN seeks to understand what is most important to the patient and family, acknowledging that they are the central focus of all care and services. He/She embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The RN keeps patients and significant others informed of the care process and anticipates patient and family needs. He/She maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the stay. The ED RN updates patient communication boards throughout the emergency department visit.
