Fisheries Technician

Idaho Fish and Game

The Fisheries Research team in the Panhandle regions is seeking two Fisheries Technicians to assist with fisheries research projects on Lake Pend Oreille. Duty station is in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and temporary housing for all positions may be available in Farragut State Park. All positions are full time (40+ hours/week). The following positions are available:

  • 8-month non-benefitted position (late August through May 2027), and
  • 4-month non-benefitted position (late August - December 2026)

Start date is flexible between August 27th and September 2nd depending on applicant availability.


General Information


Applicants with or without reasonable accommodation may be required to work long hours in various and often inclement weather conditions, hiking steep and/or slippery terrain, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 60 lbs, and occasionally working at night. The work schedule may be at times highly irregular and include occasional weekend work, night work, and overnight stays in the field. Valid driver's license required.

Qualifications


Required Qualifications:
1. Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
2. Ability to interact with the public in a professional manner.
3. Ability to follow established sampling and data entry protocols with high attention to detail.
4. Demonstrated high degree of initiative and problem-solving ability.
Desired Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or related field, or equivalent experience and training
2. Data management skills in Microsoft Suite and/or R software
3. Knowledge of fish anatomy, morphology, and physiology as well as age and growth analyses
4. Experience processing biological samples in a laboratory setting
5. Experience estimating age from otoliths and fin rays
6. Experience operating boats and hauling trailers

Responsibilities


Incumbents will work as part of a research team including commercial gillnet crews and IDFG biologists and technicians. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Processing and collecting biological samples from fish collected via gillnets
2. Euthanizing species targeted for suppression program
3. Recovering and releasing bycatch species
4. Sampling and tagging Bull Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Westslope Cutthroat Trout
5. Entering, organizing, and QA/QC of biological data
6. Preparing aging structures for age and growth analyses
7. Preparing materials and coordinating with anglers for IDFG angler science program
8. Active tracking of acoustic transmitters in Lake Trout and Bull Trout
9. Conducting spawning ground surveys for kokanee and Bull Trout
10. Assisting with other projects as needed
