PARAMEDIC (PART-TIME)

Paramedic

Provides medical care including evaluation, treatment and stabilization to the ill and injured within the established scope of practice. A Paramedic has a comprehensive knowledge base and is able to assess and provide care for a broad range of medical emergencies.

A Paramedic is distinguished in the amount of education/training received, has certification and/or licensure as a Paramedic and provides advanced-level medical care (ALS). Paramedics oversee AEMT's and EMT's in the unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides efficient and effective medical care to the ill and injured while focusing on safety;
• Operates emergency vehicles and transports patients to appropriate medical facility;
• Maintains communication with necessary parties including dispatch, hospital, police and fire personnel;
• Review and maintain accurate Patient Care Reports, files and forms;
• Ensures the quality and accuracy of care provided by AEMT's and EMT's.
• Maintains records of vehicles, supplies, training and daily work;
• Cleans and maintains equipment, vehicles and living quarters IAW local, state or federal regulations when required.
• Performs advanced techniques and procedures within the scope of practice.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides training and guidance to personnel;
• Conducts and/or guides technical rescues;
• Must attend sufficient continuing education classes, courses and seminars both on and off duty to maintain paramedic certification, as required by the State of Idaho;
• Performs other related functions as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Street systems, addresses and the physical layout of Elmore County;
• Rescue and emergency medical equipment;

Skilled in:

• Performing technical medical skills with a high degree of accuracy;
• Understanding and effectively dealing with emotional and medical needs of patients;
• Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of all units of measure;

Ability to:

• Assess and treat a medical emergency with a high degree of accuracy;
• Maintain a professional and objective approach to the care of ill or injured persons;
• Learn new concepts in rescue techniques, medical skills and in pre-hospital care;
• Manage a complex work environment related to changing customer needs;
• Solve problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization and resources exist;
• Operate standard office equipment and software programs;
• Perform basic maintenance of rescue and medical equipment;
• Understand and follow verbal and written instructions and orders;
• Maintain and exhibit behaviors consistent with principles for service excellence, high standards for performance improvement and organizational values as a representative of Elmore County;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with outside agencies and staff;
• Safely drive and operate emergency vehicles;
• Work overnight in 24-48-hour schedules with possibility of emergency call-ins on off days;
• Maintain regular and punctual attendance to ensure timely and quality emergency response services;
• Maintain a high degree of academic and practical knowledge in emergency paramedicine.

Education and Certification Requirements

Required at time of hire:

• High school diploma or GED;
• Must possess and maintain a valid Idaho driver's license;
• Must possess and maintain Idaho State Licensure as a Paramedic;
• Must possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS), Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) meeting AHA standards
• A minimum of three years' experience as a certified EMT Paramedic with transport experience is preferred;

Must be able to obtain within one-year of employment:

• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications;
• Complete an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC);
• Complete a HAZ-MAT awareness or equivalent;
• Complete ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700.

Other Requirements

• This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing;
• The incumbent will be issued and must wear Elmore Ambulance Service uniforms while on duty and be responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of both dress and safety uniforms, as well as all issued equipment;
• Must take at least 1 x 12-24 hour shift per month to stay on the PT roster.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• The incumbent must be able to perform the following with or without reasonable accommodation:
• The incumbent is required to operate emergency medical vehicles, move medical equipment and extract injured persons from a wide variety of situations involving vehicular, industrial and residential accidents, injuries or illness;
• At times the work requires movement over various types of terrain (hilly, steep, rocky, rough, and/or wet/slippery surfaces);
• The incumbent at all times must be able to carry or help carry someone from the site of the illness or injury to the mode of transportation (vehicle/helicopter) and attend to the patient while in transport;
• Must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance);
• The incumbent must see, hear and communicate with the patient in order to perform a physical assessment;

Position to remain open until filled

Work is typically performed in 24-hour shifts or a combination of 12 and 24 hour shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays. Part time EAS employees receive a $1.75 incentive on top of their base pay. Must work 1 x 12-24 hour shift per month to stay on the roster.
