The Speech Pathologist has the responsibility for the direction, utilization, supervision, and instruction of professional and supportive staff, volunteers, and students in the area of the speech pathology department/facility. The speech pathologist shall serve as part of the facility and rehabilitation team in coordinating overall patient goals. Essential Functions Supervision Scheduling patients for treatment and evaluations. Preparing reports and records by department/facility personnel. Maintaining inventory of materials and supplies for the department/facility. Using volunteers who may assist in their areas. Working with temporary Speech Pathologist Licensees, Clinical Fellows, and Student Speech Pathologists within their areas. Evaluations Responsible for the evaluation of all patients referred for Speech Therapy. Responsible for the evaluation of patients referred through HomeCare, Nursing Home, and/or In/Out‑patient. Responsible for completion and submission of all reports pertaining to the evaluation. Ensures all referral sources are advised of the department/facility action with the case referred. Treatment Practice Speech Pathology consistent with the needs of the department/facility. Maintain a patient treatment schedule consistent with the needs of the department/facility. Confer with the person(s) most closely associated with active management of the patient and keep them informed of any additional patient needs, treatment modification, and/or process. Serve as a Staff Speech Pathologist as necessary. Treat patients of all ages and demographics without bias or prejudice. Respect and understand the patient's right to treatment and involvement in treatment decisions. Practice ethical responsibility based on the cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs of patients and applicable law. Records and Reports Responsible for the preparation and submitting of department/facility reports, assuring confidentiality of all records. Evaluation reports/summaries. Discharge reports/summaries. Progress reports to referring physicians and agencies. Current progress notes on all patients. Special reports requested by the Administration and/or its designee. Meetings and Conferences Attend Department Manager Meetings as required. Attend regular department/facility meetings to: report and discuss activities and needs of the department; discuss patient's needs and progress; discuss reports and records; discuss expansion and future goals; ensure all department routines and procedures are carried out as outlined. Professional Status and Public Relations Keep abreast of new techniques and trends in the field of Rehab Services. Attend conventions, meetings, or special courses whenever possible and share information gained with department/facility personnel. Prepare and give talks to community groups as requested. Maintain good public relations with all community records. Keep current and adhere to policies and procedures as enumerated in the Policy and Procedures Manual of the department and the risk management program. Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required Qualifications – Master’s Degree in Communicative Disorders – Speech Pathology. License – Speech Pathologist license in Iowa. Experience – Must be a graduate of, or have a certificate from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association approved school of Speech-Language-Hearing or corresponding associations; current state licensure is required. Continuing Education – Must maintain Iowa continuing education requirements. CPR – Must have verification card of current instruction in CPR. Driver's License – Valid Iowa Driver’s License. Performance Requirements – Responsible for interpreting and carrying out the prescription of the physician; good public relations; protection of confidential data; economic use of time, equipment, and supplies; safety and welfare of patients and employees. Clinical Knowledge – Must know the principles and practices of Speech Pathology; be familiar with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Code of Ethics; understand department/facility policies and regulations; be aware of inter and intra departmental communications; possess supervision and management techniques. Technical Skills – Must be able to apply the theory of Speech Language Therapy; operate equipment; perform technical procedures; communicate professionally; supervise and manage staff. Decision Making – Must be able to assess situations, adapt to emergencies, be alert to changes in patient condition, and make independent decisions. Manual Dexterity – Coordination of hand and body movements in various procedures; ability to handle equipment. Communication Skills – Foster good public relations; accuracy in prescriptions; charting and reporting. Policy Adherence – Keep current with policies and procedures. Department Performance Improvement – Participate in risk management program. Physical Activity Requirements Sitting – up to 33% of work time. Standing – up to 33% of work time. Walking – up to 33% of work time. Climbing – up to 33% of work time. Bending/Stooping/Kneeling – up to 33% of work time. Repetitive Motion – up to 33% of work time. Lifting/Carrying – up to 33% of work time; up to 10 pounds (rapidly), 11-20 pounds, 21-30 pounds, 31-40 pounds, 41-50 pounds, 51 pounds or more occasional. Hearing – normal range for telephone contacts. Seeing – correctable to view computer screens and read printed information. Equipment/Tools Operate office equipment such as computers, printers, copy machine, calculator, facsimile, and scanners. Understand oral and written instructions regarding set-up, operation of equipment, preparations of patients for treatment and other related activities. Apply theory of Speech Pathology and operate the equipment of the position. Working Conditions Good physical stamina, energetic, written, speaking and speaking speeds, and good manual dexterity are required. Able to walk, stand, stoop, lift, balance, sit, kneel, hear, reach, pull, talk, see, turn, carry, push, handle, and write. Work conditions include normal temperature with adequate light, a well‑ventilated clean area; moderate noise may occur. Exposure to communicable diseases, on‑the‑job injuries, and radiation from modified Barium Swallow Assessments may occur. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Vision must be correctable to view computer screens and read printed information, with close, distance, colour, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus. Hearing must be in normal range for telephone contacts and other conversations.
