Aquatics Specialist

Perform specialized, technical, and supervisory work within the Recreation Division of the Parks and Recreation Department. Performs related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: This is highly responsible work involving assisting a Recreation Coordinator with a variety of duties. The incumbent works under the general direction of a coordinator and assists in planning, organizing, inspecting, supervising and coordinating specific operations, activities and events in the recreation division. Responsibilities are varied in nature and require a degree of technical, supervisory or administrative expertise and ability. Assists in supervising varied recreation activities or events; Evaluates adequacy of existing facilities and equipment for recreation activities and events; Oversees the operation of work crews engaged in parks operations and/or assists program staff with facility operations and events; May be required to assume responsibility for recreation programs; Develops training sessions and manuals for staff; Prepares technical specifications; Develops and monitors specific department operations; Drafts and implements budget documents, monitors inventory, obtains price quotations, and adheres to budget constraints; Prepares requisitions for materials, equipment and services; Assists in interviewing and hiring of division staff; Coordinates and oversees special events; Represents the department in contact with other agencies and the public. Aquatics – Additional Essential Job Functions: Supervises the operation and maintenance of an aquatic facility; Plans, promotes, organizes and conducts a complete program of swimming to include beginners and advanced swimming, lifesaving and competitive swimming; Trains and supervises pool personnel; Responsible for the operation of the pool filter system, makes daily tests of water, and complete daily reports on condition of water; Equipment Used/Job Location: Works outdoors in varying weather conditions. Operates a calculator, computer, as well as equipment developed or advanced from future technology as required by the job. May operate a vehicle. While performing duties, may be exposed to insects, pesticides, grass, dust, and chemicals. (Aquatics – Additional equipment used): pool pumps, filtration systems, water testing/chemical equipment, lifesaving equipment, and point-of-sale equipment. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OR WORK PERFORMED: Acts as Coordinator in the absence of the coordinator. (Aquatics): Responsible for ensuring collection of admission fees, depositing money collected and reporting on receipts. (Aquatics): High school graduation plus some professional experience in the operation and maintenance of a public aquatic facility, including filter plant operation OR An equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license. Possession of a current valid Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate, Lifeguard Certificate and CPR Certificate. Must also possess a pool operator’s license or Aquatic Facility Operator Certificate. Must have 20/40 uncorrected vision.The selected candidate must obtain required certifications within 60 days from date of hire. Certifications must be maintained throughout employment. Good knowledge of all phases of recreation activities and their administration; Good speaking, reading, writing, comprehension, and leadership skills; Good knowledge of all phases off parks activities and their administration; Good working knowledge of human relations and the ability to work with people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds; A high level of independent decision-making ability; Ability to accept responsibility and to carry projects to successful completion; Ability to accept and to delegate authority; May be required to climb, bend, and lift or drag heavy objects; Ability to operate an automobile. (Aquatics – Additional required knowledge, skills and abilities): Thorough knowledge of modern public aquatic facility aquatic facility operation and maintenance; Considerable knowledge of pool safety practices and health regulations; Ability to swim and perform lifesaving techniques. #J-18808-Ljbffr
