Lecturer/Instructor/Assistant Professor Genetic Counseling

The Center for Precision Medicine and Genomics (CPMG) in the Department of Medicine, under the direction of Dr. Ali Gharavi, is a growing program that comprehensively integrates genetics and genomics into patient care, research, and training, across medical specialties. The CPMG is seeking a genetic counselor to join the growing team of genetic counselors, researchers, bioinformaticians, and clinicians in a full-time position. This position carries a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S) of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) at the rank of Lecturer, Instructor or Assistant Professor (based on relevant experience and qualifications). Clinical responsibilities include providing genetic counseling services to patients and family members in the multiple adult specialty genetics clinics in CPMG and Department of Medicine. In this role, the genetic counselor will conduct intake screening, risk assessment, explain nature and scope of testing procedures; act as a liaison between the clinical department and the molecular diagnostic laboratories; communicate results to patients and families and write summary reports; and develop and present in-service education to physicians and other health care providers to increase genetic testing fluency among providers of the Medical Center. Additionally, the genetic counselor will be involved in the implementation of new opportunities for the provision of genetic counseling across clinical and research specialties in the Department of Medicine. Research responsibilities may include enrollment of patients into different genomic research studies, serving as the primary contact for both potential patients and referring physicians, review of patient medical records, coordination and implementation of study procedures, return of results to referring physicians and/or patients as indicated, and providing post-test counseling, education, and support to patients and families. The genetic counselor may also be responsible for submissions to the IRB and other regulatory bodies as needed, maintenance of study files and databases, and ensuring overall adherence to written protocols and regulatory requirements. In addition, the genetic counselor will be encouraged to participate in scholarly activity, including research collaboration, abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations at national meetings. Educational responsibilities may including clinical supervision, research mentoring, teaching and/or course instruction, and other scholarly activities, consistent with outlined department and institution requirements. Responsibilities Provide genetic counseling services to patients and families across medical specialty genetics clinics within CPMG, including intake assessment, risk evaluation, test coordination, and results disclosure. Support the development and expansion of genetic counseling services across clinical and research specialties in the Department of Medicine. Participate in genomic research studies, including patient recruitment, consent, data collection, and adherence to IRB-approved protocols, including maintaining IRB submissions and compliance with study documentation. Engage in variant interpretation, analysis, and expected pathogenicity in relation to the patients' phenotype, as well as expanding and understanding genotype-phenotype correlations Participate in education and scholarly activities, including abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations, as appropriate. Contribute to the education and training of graduate students, fellows, residents and faculty through formal didactic teaching, guest lectures, curriculum development, learner evaluation, and/or mentorship of trainees across disciplines. Perform other duties as assigned in support of clinical, research, and educational initiatives. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling Board eligible or board certified as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling At least 1 year of relevant clinical experience Key Skills Ability to work independently Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams Conversational Spanish (preferred but not required) Preferred Qualifications Conversational Spanish (preferred but not required) Experience in clinical research Salary Range $110,000.00 - $115,000.00 Pay Transparency Disclosure The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
