Position Summary

The Mental Health and Disabilities Coordinator is responsible for providing early childhood support to Early Head Start staff, children, and families. The Mental Health and Disabilities Coordinator will provide a broad range of services, including early childhood mental health and disabilities consultation in classrooms and through home visits; training and coaching for staff; screening, assessment, and referral services; promotion of group services; and family training. The Mental Health and Disabilities Coordinator will also collect data, maintain records, and support compliance in all facets of the Early Head Start Program. Performance Standards and state regulations in the assigned Serve Area .

Core Functional Responsibilities

General Consultation and Coaching

• Collaborate with staff to explore child development information related to social and emotional development, mental health, and children meeting child development milestones.
• Guide staff in selecting, implementing, and interpreting social, emotional, and developmental screening and assessment tools and findings. Answer questions about developmentally appropriate activities for children and effective ways to work with and support young children.
• Provide strengths-based feedback to classrooms annually.
• Meet with the classroom teams to review staff’s classroom observations and develop and implement plans as needed for both mental health and disabilities.

Staff Training

• Lead, coordinate, and provide staff training related to social and emotional, mental health, and developmental delay concerns in collaboration with Education Leadership and management staff.

Programmatic Consultation

• Participate in staff team meetings.
• Participate in the development and implementation of the mental health program and policy.
• Lead the Health and Mental Health Services Advisory Committee (HMHSAC) Mental Health Subcommittee and Early Head Start Mental Health work group.
• Participate in all IFSP meetings and evaluations and follow up with staff to support the child’s learning and development in Home Visits and in the classroom.
• Conduct meetings with families of children with disabilities to ensure that they understand the IFSP document and Early Intervention Process.
• Participate in the School Readiness Task Force meetings.

Family Training

• Conduct one Parent Meeting training yearly with parents to discuss the screening process and referrals to Early Intervention.
• Conduct one Parent Meeting training yearly with parents to discuss preventative mental health tools, signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, treatments, and support.

Individualized Child and Family-Centered Observations and Consultation

• Conduct observations (classroom and home visits) and assessments of individual children as assigned or referred for consultation.
• Meet with families to consult on child and family needs and create or follow up on plans to support these needs.
• Conduct life-event meetings with staff and external partners, and provide feedback and leadership.
• Upload all mental health consultation notes and documents into the ChildPlus database system.

Individualized Child Screening, Assessment, and Referral

• Review standardized developmental, behavioral, and social and emotional screens and assessments for individual children as assigned or referred for consultation.
• Provide child and family referrals and follow-up to community services, including referrals to Early Intervention for an evaluation and in-person attendance at disability meetings.
• Act as a liaison to MCC’s Mobile Family Therapy (MFT) program therapists and leadership.

Home Visiting

• Conduct home visits to support the mental health and disability needs of families and children.
• Provide guidance and model developmentally appropriate activities for children and effective ways to work with and support young children,

Supporting Responsibilitie s

• Participate in regular supervision with the direct supervisor, the Director of Health and Safety, and the Senior Director of Programs
• Contribute to federal, state, and local reporting requirements.
• The mental health and disabilities coordinator will report to the Director of Education, with guidance from the Director of Health and Safety, who will assign and oversee the coordinator's work.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Demonstrate understanding of infant and early childhood mental health
• Demonstrate understanding of differences in mental health services and concepts across cultures
• Demonstrate knowledge of the child mental health services system
• Demonstrate knowledge of the child early intervention system
• Demonstrate experience with clinical documentation
• Experience formulating and writing assessments and support plans, preferably for young children
• Experience with evidence-based practices and curricula to promote early childhood mental health desirable (eg., Creative Curriculum, Parents as Teachers)
• Knowledge of Head Start programs.
• Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with service providers and families
• Partner with providers as a member of the team.
• Lead and facilitate provider training and family education groups.
• Conduct standardized screens and assessments, preferably for young children.
• Use results of screens and assessments to guide work with families, set goals, and develop individualized plans.
• Refer providers and families to appropriate community services.
• Communicate effectively with groups both verbally and in writing.
• Organize tasks and manage time effectively.
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with MCC and Early Head Start policies and procedures.

Experience, Education, and Licensure

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related field. 
• Master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or related field preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of three years of direct experience in a mental health setting providing prevention services or mental health therapy to children and families.

Maternity Care Coalition operates as a hybrid organization. The assigned work arrangement for this position may include a combination of remote and onsite work and will be determined based on operational needs, role responsibilities, and performance. Work arrangement expectations may be modified over time to meet organizational or programmatic requirements. Staff working remotely are responsible for maintaining a safe and appropriate workspace.

• Ability to engage in extended periods of sitting, computer work, and sustained concentration to complete financial analysis, reporting, and related tasks.
• Ability to occasionally bend, reach, lift, carry, push, or pull training materials or equipment, generally not exceeding 30 pounds.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state of residence, proof of insurance, and the ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle record check, where driving is an essential function of the role.
• Ability to travel occasionally to attend conferences, seminars, and professional meetings.
• Ability to work non‑traditional hours on an occasional basis based on operational needs.
• Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of required post‑offer pre‑employment background clearances, as well as any additional post‑hire background, compliance, or programmatic clearances required by the organization, funders, or applicable regulations.
• This role supports compliance for regulated funding streams, including Early Head Start, through timely financial reporting, audit readiness, and escalation of material risks to executive leadership.
• Operate related office equipment and use necessary tools. Regular keyboarding and computer use.

Competitive Salaries:

• Anticipated Hiring Salary: $63,000.00 based on qualifications and experience.
• Salary Range: $49,746.00 - $66,328.00 ; Employees may become eligible for compensation increases within the salary range over time, consistent with performance, market conditions, internal equity, and business needs.
