Job Summary and Qualifications

POSIT I ON SUMMARY :  

Provides  direct patient care , applying sound  physics to  assist   with diagnosis. Perform  sonograph ic imaging and related procedures in all a pplication s of ultrasound. Demonstrates anatomy for interpretation and /or intervention by, or at the request of a licensed practitioner. Exercises professional judgment in  the  performance of services and  maintains a demeanor complementary to medical ethics. Applies  appropriate patient care and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of  the  procedure. Applies knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span to  identify patient and family requirements  relative to age-specific needs.  

Participates in providing  patient-specific care standards as  directed and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.  

ESSENTIAL JOB  RES P ONSIBILITIES :  

  Technical Responsibilities  

  • Consistently produce scans of  optimal diagnostic quality on patients ranging from  n eonatal to  g eriatric , adhering to  established scanning and operational protocols  

  • Operate the Ultrasound  equipment   safely,  efficiently , and effectively  

  • Complete diagnostic quality scans  in a timely  manner ;   Continuously   triage  incoming orders  and   modify workflow to  prioritize STAT and urgent demands  

  • Demonstrat e   proficiency in scanning trauma, acute &  technically  challenging patients;  Possess skill s   to  modify positioning and scanning  paramete rs as needed   to ensure diagnostic accuracy  

  • Possess  in-depth  knowledge of human anatomy ,   pathology , and image o ptimiz ation to provide diagnostic  information necessary for diagnosis ; communicate  preliminary findings and  relevant patient information to the Radiologist  

  • Cross-collaboration with other departments to coordinate procedures  

  • Assist physicians  with   performing invasive exam s according to departmental guidelines; Knowledge of biopsy and  procedural supplies, including associated charges  

  • Assist with procedures in  the  OR  

  • Review written orders,  assess patient identification , and ensure indic ations are  appropriate prior to   procedure s   

  • Ensure that procedure rooms are clean, stocked , and  communicate when supplies need to be ordered  

  • Accurately p erform and document high-level disinfection on transvaginal  transducers according to p olicy  

  • Cover on-call shifts on a rotating basis; Arrive at facility within 30 minutes of receipt of call  

  • Accept direction and constructive feedback in a positive and professional manner  

  • Maintain  working  knowledge and adhere nce to all  SAMC   H ospital  c odes , policies,   values,  standards, and   mandatory education  

  • C onduct must reflect the Company’s values and a commitment to the Code of Conduct   ethics and compliance program.  

  • Other duties , as assigned  

KNOWLEDGE,  SKILLS AND ABILITIES :  

Required:  Must  possess the knowledge,  skills and abilities to perform all  applicable  diagnostic  ultrasound procedures including abdominal,  OB/GYN, small parts, vascular,  invasive guidance , and neonatal exams. Must  be collaborative and  work well with others in a  fast-paced i maging department.   Must provide outstanding  care and  services to patients, physicians,  visitors, and co lleague s.  Maintain awareness of patient privacy (HIPAA), confidentiality, and dignity at all times.  

Must be able to  demonstrate understanding of  national patient safety initiative s by strict compliance to all s afety protocols and procedures as required by both HCA and  St. David’s  South Austin Medical Center.  

Preferred:  Computer skills ,  previous experience in applicable field  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :  

Required:  A single two-year allied health education program that is  patient-care related OR Graduate of a program accredited by an agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), United States Department of Education (USDOE) or Canadian Medical Association (CMA), that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology.  

  Preferred:  Associate ’ s Degree or higher in  a  related technological field . One year  of  previous experience as  a  diagnostic medical sonographer.  

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES :  

Required:   

  • Credentials with the American Registry for Diagnosti c Medical Sonographers (ARDMS ) 

  • BLS certification  

Preferred:  

  • Registered Vascular Technologist ( RVT ) 

  • P ost-primary certification in Sonography
