The role is responsible for delivering anesthesia services across a wide range of orthopedic surgical procedures, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the perioperative continuum. The Anesthesiologist is directly accountable to the Medical Director of Specialists One-Day Surgery Center and collaborates closely with the ASC Executive Director and the Clinical Director for administrative oversight. This role also participates in peer review, credentialing, and quality improvement processes as required. Qualifications Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution. Completion of an accredited Anesthesiology residency program. Current New York State Medical License. Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Anesthesiology. Current BLS and ACLS certification. DEA registration. Regional Pain / outpatient or orthopedic anesthesia preferred. Membership in professional organizations such as ASA or NYSSA encouraged. Supervisory Responsibilities Provides clinical direction and supervision to CRNAs, physician assistants, residents, fellows, and/or medical trainees as applicable. Serves as a resource for nursing and surgical staff in anesthesia-related care and patient safety. Physical & Cognitive Requirements The Anesthesiologist must be able to engage in physically and mentally demanding activities required in the surgical environment by meeting the following: Hepatitis, rubella, and measles immunization (or documented refusal/exception). Annual tuberculosis screening (Mantoux or chest x-ray). Annual health assessment sufficient to ensure ability to perform duties safely. Ability to stand for long periods, assist in patient transfers, and respond rapidly to critical events. Physically able to perform CPR and advanced resuscitation procedures. Ability to sustain concentration for extended periods, exercise critical judgment under pressure, and respond quickly to emergent clinical situations. Typical Working Conditions Work is performed in a surgical center environment with exposure to bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, anesthetic agents, radiation, and other occupational hazards common to healthcare. Age of Patient/Customer No patients under the age of 10. Responsibilities Preoperative Assessment & Planning Evaluate patients preoperatively, including history, physical exam, and risk assessment. Develop individualized anesthetic plans considering patient comorbidities, surgical requirements, and best practices. Obtain informed consent and provide patient/family education about anesthesia care. Ensure all preoperative documentation and required clearances are complete. Intraoperative Anesthesia Care Administer safe and effective anesthesia, including general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care, appropriate to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Continuously monitor patient status, including hemodynamic, respiratory, and neurologic function. Anticipate, prevent, and manage perioperative complications. Ensure aseptic and safe use of medications, equipment, and monitoring devices. Provide clinical leadership and coordinate with surgical staff during procedures. Postoperative Management Provide safe emergence from anesthesia and transfer of care to recovery staff. Oversee effective pain control strategies. Collaborate with PACU staff in monitoring and stabilizing patients during recovery. Document care accurately and promptly, including unusual occurrences. Participate in postoperative rounds and follow‑up as required. Quality, Safety & Compliance Adhere to ASA, CMS, AAAHC, and Joint Commission standards in anesthesia practice. Participate in morbidity & mortality reviews, peer review processes, and ongoing quality improvement initiatives. Maintain compliance with SOS credentialing, privileging, and reappointment requirements. Ensure safe and effective use of anesthesia equipment; report and assist in resolving equipment failures. Professional & Collaborative Duties Participate in the evaluation of new equipment, techniques, and clinical protocols. Provide consultation and education to patients, families, and staff. Assist in mentoring CRNAs, nurses, and medical trainees as applicable. Demonstrate professional and cooperative behavior, fostering a supportive team environment.
