We’re looking for a Payments Architecture & Engineering Specialist to join our Payrix software engineering team and help shape the future of global commerce.What you’ll ownWe are seeking a highly experienced Payments Architecture & Engineering Specialist to help design, evolve, and execute against the technology strategy of a large-scale payments platform.This role operates at the intersection of application architecture, cloud infrastructure, and platform engineering, with a strong emphasis on hands-on delivery. You will partner closely with engineering leadership to shape the future state of payment systems while driving execution across complex, high-impact initiatives.This is a senior individual contributor role designed for a technical leader who thrives in ambiguity, understands the realities of building and scaling payment systems, and can move seamlessly between architecture, development, and infrastructure.Architecture & System DesignLead the design and evolution of core payments system architecture, including APIs, transaction processing, funding flows, and supporting servicesDefine patterns and standards across monoliths, microservices, and event-driven architectureDrive architectural decisions across applications, infrastructure, and data layersEvaluate and guide modernization efforts (e.g., decomposition, service boundaries, integration strategies)Hands-on Engineering & ExecutionActively contribute to engineering efforts across the stack, including:Backend services and APIsInfrastructure as Code (Terraform/Pulumi)CI/CD pipelines and deployment automationBuild and prototype solutions for new architectural patterns and platform capabilitiesPerform deep technical troubleshooting and help resolve complex production issuesPayments Domain LeadershipApply deep understanding of payments systems and flows, including:Merchant onboarding, transaction authorization, settlement, and fundingRisk, underwriting, and compliance considerations (e.g., PCI)Processor and third-party integrationsPartner with product and engineering teams to ensure technical solutions align with business and regulatory requirementsPlatform & Developer EnablementImprove engineering velocity through enhancements to:CI/CD pipelines, testing, and deployment workflowsGitHub, Jira, and developer tooling ecosystemsInfrastructure provisioning and environment consistencyEstablish best practices and guardrails for scalable, reliable developmentHigh-Impact & Ambiguous WorkLead and execute cross-cutting, high-priority initiatives that span multiple teamsStep into undefined or complex problem spaces and drive clarity, direction, and deliveryAct as a technical force multiplier, accelerating progress across architecture and engineering effortsStrategic PartnershipServe as a trusted partner to engineering leadership, contributing to:Technology strategy and roadmap developmentArchitecture reviews and decision-making forumsEvaluation of tools, platforms, and investmentsHelp bridge gaps between product, engineering, platform, and operations teamsWhat you’ll bringCore CharacteristicsStrong technical leader who combines architectural thinking with hands-on executionComfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-moving environmentsHigh ownership mindset; able to independently drive outcomesEffective communicator who can influence across engineering and business stakeholdersTechnical ExpertiseExtensive experience designing and building large-scale distributed systemsStrong background in cloud-native architecture (AWS preferred)Hands-on experience with:Backend development (PHP, C#, multiple languages preferred)Microservices and API designEvent-driven architectureInfrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar)CI/CD and automation frameworksFamiliarity with observability, resiliency patterns, and performance optimizationPayments & Financial Systems Experience (Strongly Preferred)Experience building or operating payments platforms or transactional systemsKnowledge of payment processing flows, integration, and lifecycle managementUnderstanding of compliance and regulatory considerations (e.g., PCI, data protection)Versatility & DepthProven ability to:Work across applications, infrastructure, and platform layersJump into unfamiliar systems and quickly deliver valueLead technical efforts without direct authorityPrior experience in roles such as:Senior/Staff Engineer, Architect, or similar senior IC rolesAbout the teamOur inclusive and global teams win together every day. For this full-time position, the good faith estimated annual salary range upon hire is $127,500.00-$192,525.00. This range reflects what we reasonably expect to offer based on the role’s responsibilities, level, and geographic location. The actual starting salary will be determined by a candidate’s experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training. Please note that changes in work location may impact the final offered salary.
