Principal Research Scientist II Engineering - Material Sciences

About the Role The Research and Development Process Engineering team is responsible for developing processes that enable delivery of AbbVie’s candidate molecules in a dosage form intended for product commercialization. This role focuses on solid oral drug product development projects and involves leadership of material science and engineering initiatives. Responsibilities Lead the Material Science and Engineering Forum, directing the team toward project success and scientific branding. Solid Oral Project Assessments Provide proactive guidance on all early phase solid oral projects. Define recommended material sampling locations, amounts and characterization tests. Compile and maintain target material attributes to ensure commercial manufacturability. Develop and implement models to de‑risk project issues, minimize development timelines and reduce material consumption, including population balance models. Lead Solid Oral Drug Product Project development; oversee DP engineering and DPT Lead responsibilities. Manage the material science characterization lab and associated requests. Supervise and train individuals executing tests. Identify and maintain required material characterization equipment. Advance scientific expertise: stay current on emerging pharmaceutical industry trends and apply imagination and innovation to develop new technologies. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering with 16 years of related work, master’s degree with 14 years, or PhD with 8 years of related work. Proven ability to innovate with a history of new or improved product releases. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact well with diverse groups within function and maintain strong relationships with internal and external collaborators. Excellent oral & written communication, organization and multitasking skills. Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Additional Information Compensation range: The range of possible base pay compensation that the company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of posting. Individual compensation will depend on factors such as geographic location and may be modified.
