Patients are admitted for procedures including various cardiac and thoracic surgeries. The nurse-patient ratio is 4 or 5:1 in acute care and 3:1 in intermediate care. This is a 28-bed unit, consisting of 22 acute-care beds and 6 intermediate care beds. The unit provides care for patients who do not require the intense environment of an ICU but need advanced monitoring. Patients include those recovering from major surgeries and requiring specialized medical interventions. Some patients are admitted directly from the recovery room. The workload includes managing patients on cardiac drips and those requiring advanced monitoring. The unit emphasizes aggressive management of conditions such as acute heart failure. Staff will work a schedule that includes every other weekend. Time off around specific holidays may not be approved. Staff must be able to float within their scope of practice as required. Team collaboration is an essential part of the unit's operation. Competency in telemetry and management of dysrhythmias is expected. The patient demographics include adults and geriatric populations. Healthcare professionals in this role will utilize various specialized equipment and technology in patient care. Nurse-driven protocols will be followed for specific treatments and interventions.
