Job Summary
Responsible for providing professional veterinary services. Oversee and perform veterinary procedures that support the colony. Oversee all aspects of the animal care and use program as needed. May supervise or oversee veterinary technicians and manage the activities of assigned section to ensure effective performance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides professional veterinary services to support or manage oversight of all animal care and use functions involving laboratory animals.
Develops, implements and controls procedures related to the acquisition, maintenance, quarantine, and disposition of all research animals including provision of appropriate clinical, preventive and emergency veterinary care for various species.
Provides support in protocol design, facility design, biosecurity practices, occupational health program, equipment procurement, animal model selection and development, surgical services and animal and colony health monitoring programs.
Ensures compliance with established company, regulatory and industry standards.
Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories as pertains to the veterinary and comparative medicine field.
Maintains knowledge of regulatory compliance requirements.
Ensure facility is in compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines and standards that relate to animal care and use (e.g. USDA, FDA, AAALAC).
May advise senior management in animal welfare, care and use matters as they relate to application of new technology, the use of alternatives, support of the 3Rs and new animal models.
Assist in the development and deliver training for staff. Training may include veterinary diagnostics, techniques and minor surgical procedures.
May participate in the response to internal/external inspections and quality assurance audits of veterinary or animal welfare type content.
Provide support for activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including protocol review, program review and facility inspections. May serve on the IACUC committee.
Write, review and update veterinary care and/or necropsy SOPs as required.
May assist in management of the activities of assigned section, including providing direction to junior employees, scheduling activities, and personnel development of veterinary technical team and husbandry staff.
Job Qualifications
Education: Veterinary degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.) or international equivalent.
Experience: Zero to two years related experience with animal care and surgical techniques. Experience in a research/lab animal/GLP environment preferred, but not required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
Certification/Licensure: Must be licensed in country, province or state of employment to fulfill requirements to practice veterinary medicine, and sign health certificates. Must be able to maintain current licensure/certification. USDA accreditation or application submitted within 1 month of hire.
Other: Computer literacy (Windows PC) WordPerfect and Excel. Good communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies and guidelines that govern animal research, research conduct principles (GLP) and current methodology of laboratory animal medicine and management is important.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, crouch, bend, climb, reach overhead, kneel, push/pull and use hands to manipulate objects of varying size and with varying degrees of precision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to discern animal health and well-being through visual and physical assessment. Employees must be able to lift, move and/or hold up to 40 pounds; this includes equipment and animals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
General office and research laboratory working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, although hearing protection may be required for short periods when working with certain species.
While performing the duties of this job the employee will be required to wear protective clothing (safety glasses, face shield, N-95, cap, gloves, scrubs), work near toxic or caustic chemicals, work with biohazards, and/or work with live animals with risk of exposure to allergens and/or zoonotic diseases. The employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, unpleasant odors, and/or wet, humid and/or extreme temperature conditions.
Comments:
This position requires weekend/holiday coverage, on-call rotation, and the necessity to return to the facility outside of normal business hours.
This position may require domestic and international travel to provide support other sites within our portfolio.
Compensation Data
The pay range for this position is $145,000 - $165,000. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
Note: Relocation assistance (if necessary), sign-on bonus and a retention bonus will be part of the overall compensation package as well.

Each year approximately 120 investigational new drug (IND) programs are conducted in our Safety Assessment facilities.
