Position Overview Job Title: Teacher - Itinerant Deaf Education (SSC) (Job ID: 3898) Position Type: Professional - Teacher Level (Secondary)/ Secondary Teacher Shift Type: Full-Time Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Reports To: Coordinator - Deaf Education Employment Begins: As soon as possible Primary Purpose To provide instruction and assistance necessary to enable all students with hearing impairments in the districts of the Shared Service Agreement to achieve and function successfully in the least restrictive environment. Qualifications Education/Certification: Bachelor's Degree, with appropriate state certification in area of deaf and hard of hearing. Special Knowledge / Skills Demonstrate a cognitive understanding of the subject matter and pedagogical skills in deaf education. Possess knowledge of all district, state and federal regulations regarding the deaf and hearing impaired. Exhibit excellent communication (verbal and written), public relation, and interpersonal skills. Possess knowledge and understanding of the impact of deafness on language and communication. Possess knowledge and understanding of conflict resolution and facilitation skills. Demonstrate highly effective organizational and consensus building skills. Understand the value of planning and demonstrate ability to develop and implement short and long range instructional plans based upon effective instructional strategies, knowledge of the impact of deafness, student needs and performances, the global society, the community, the curriculum, and the student's Individual Education Plan. Understand the various learning styles and show competence in developing and delivering instruction appropriate to students' developmental needs. Possess knowledge base for critiquing, constructing, and utilizing multiple forms of appropriate assessment techniques in order to monitor progress, modify and adapt instruction, and set goals. Exhibit effective communication skills and techniques, including verbal, nonverbal, media and sign language communication that are sensitive to student differences and needs. Possess basic understanding of the impact of technology as it relates to deafness. Have knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures for the MISD and the district served. Experience None required. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable. Major Responsibilities and Duties Teach children with hearing impairments to function in the least restrictive environment with modifications. Plan programs of instruction that meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students. Conduct necessary assessment to determine instructional goals and objectives for individual hearing impaired students. Develop and update the individual education plan for students. Work in collaboration with the classroom teacher(s) who may be involved with these students in formulating teaching strategies, planning appropriate lessons, and evaluating student progress. Attend Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings for students with hearing impairments. Install, maintain, and give instruction for specialized equipment to students/staff. Confer with audiologist and other specialists. Maintain accurate pupil accounting records in compliance with the local and state requirements, including TEA annual registration. Make a provision for being available to students, teachers and parents as necessary. Reveal confidential information concerning students only when disclosure serves professional purposes or is required by law. Maintain and submit travel logs as required. Maintain an ongoing program of professional growth that fulfills district requirements and personal expectations as a professional. Take an active part in the district-approved teacher evaluation process, contributing to a mutual agreement concerning the results of that evaluation. Attend staff and district meetings to promote communication and mutual decision making among the staff. Other School Health and Related Services (SHARS) duties as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Student teachers, student groups, volunteers, etc., as assigned by the administration. Working Conditions Communicating well, making multiple decisions regarding students educational, physical, and emotional well being, and maintaining emotional control under stress. Determining appropriate annual goals for the development of the student's Individual Education Plan. Lifting, carrying, and transporting instructional materials and equipment. In-district and out-of-district travel. Frequent prolonged and irregular hours.
