They will support supervision of the locomotive mechanic and electrician team to achieve maintenance goals with optimum safety, economy, efficiency, and effectiveness ensuring the availability of locomotive fleet and compliance with company and federal regulatory standards and guidelines.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSupervise and coordinate the activities of the locomotive teamThe Locomotive Supervisor must teach, apply and monitor Federal Railroad Administration, State, Federal and company standards, rules and regulationsCommunicate and monitor performance goals, quality standards, KMIs and financial performance to ensure safety and efficiencySupport training and developing team members with locomotive electrical and mechanical systemsGuide and direct team members to technically troubleshoot locomotive failures, repairs, and service processes in person and over the phoneAssist with the repair of locomotive component rebuilds, traction motor repair and/or replacement and air system troubleshooting and repairRead, analyze, and interpret locomotive downloads, blueprints, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulationsDraft reports, repair estimates, business correspondence, and procedural instructions and effectively present information to managers, team members, and customersThe Locomotive Supervisor will inspect, test, and maintain locomotives and locomotive components according to Federal regulations and compile records to comply with Federal and company standards, rules, and regulationsMaintain a reliable inventory of parts and materials for the proper maintenance of locomotivesCoordinate daily locomotive needs with the dispatcher and/or site leadership teamApply and teach knowledge of the proper use of various wear limit gauges and testing equipmentSupport investigations, emergency repairs, and re-railing of railroad rolling stockInterpret and delegate instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule formDemonstrate and teach the safe use of types of tools and equipment such as, but not limited to, welders, torches, hammers, jacks, and other types of other mechanical, air, and hand tools pertaining to the maintenance of rolling stockAssist in preparation and administration of performance appraisals within the locomotive departmentSupport team member development to assure highly qualified successors are in placeWork with internal and external customers to ensure a level of customer service consistent with company goalsRead and accurately interpret company documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulationsRespond promptly to all accidents, incidents, or emergency callsThe Locomotive Supervisor will assist with evaluating and documenting team member performance within the locomotive department, including training, disciplinary action, and terminationsConduct efficiency testing and monitor safe working practices in the fieldAssist with interviewing and hiring for open positionsDemonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendanceLearn Chief Mechanical Officer responsibilities and fill vacancy as neededPerforms other duties as assigned and requiredEducation High School or GED equivalent
