Johnston County Public Schools Swift Creek Elementary – 1st Grade Teacher Starting Date: Immediately Responsibilities Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready for each lesson immediately at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task promptly; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task. Management of Student Behavior: The teacher has established set of rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, talk during activities (whole class, small group, etc.), and movement in the classroom. The teacher frequently monitors student behavior during all activities and transitions, stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, while preserving student dignity. Instructional Presentation: The teacher begins each lesson with a review of prior materials; introduces the lesson with clear objectives; speaks fluently and precisely, presenting concepts in language understandable to the students; provides relevant examples and demonstrations; assigns tasks students handle successfully; asks appropriate questions; conducts the lesson briskly, slowing when needed, and ensures smooth transitions. The teacher summarizes the main points at the end of the lesson. Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: The teacher sets clear, firm work standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check all students’ performance; routinely uses oral, written, and other work products for progress checks; poses questions clearly and one at a time. Instructional Feedback: The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth, offers prompt feedback on out‑of‑class assignments, affirms correct oral responses, and provides sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses by probing, repeating, giving clues, or allowing more time. Facilitating Instruction: The teacher holds an instructional plan compatible with school and system‑wide curricular goals; uses diagnostic data from tests and other assessments to develop and revise objectives; maintains accurate records of student performance; aligns objectives, learning strategies, assessments, and student needs at appropriate difficulty; uses available human and material resources to support instruction. Interacting Within the Educational Environment: The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably; interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community. Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties assigned or perceived necessary; adheres to laws, policies, rules, and regulations; follows a professional development plan and shows evidence of growth. Qualifications Degree in education or a related field that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Ability to constantly monitor student safety and well‑being, especially during inclusive activities. Ability to motivate students and maintain a clean, orderly environment. Ability to perform general clerical duties, maintain basic files and records, and operate common office machines. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by assignments. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Physical Requirements: Use a variety of equipment and classroom tools, including computers, copiers, calculators, and tools for children with special needs; exert negligible force frequently; stand and walk; light work conditions.
